Question 4 speed?????

I found a Muncie 4spd on craislist. i talked the guy down from 150 to 75...said it came out of a 71 duly that was used as a wrecker every once and a while, winch and everything, whole nine yards...so i was wondering if that would be a good thing to do or just rebuild the 3spd i have now. he said it works prefectly fine and there isnt a thing wrong with it, i have to check it out to make sure, but thats what im going off of for now. i have a 250 Inline and as i've read they bolt up with no problems but i might have to get a new clutch because im not sure what kinda spline it has....just let me know what you think

Re: 4 speed?????

Wish I could find a deal like that... I'd prolly give 150 for one that 'might could use a rebuild' I'd go $75 for one that might be just fine, even if it turned out to need a rebuild...

Re: 4 speed?????

You are going to have to have a high hump floor if you don't already. Those SM465s are tall. Driveshaft mods too.

Why not just rebuild the three speed ? I can recommend a local place that's top notch...

Re: 4 speed?????

I was planning on getting it rebuilt, so I went around and got some prices. One place wanted 1700 and another wanted 900 and the last one I checked wanted 600. If I could afford those places I would but I'm on a super tight budget right now sooo 75.oo looks a lot better than 600 right now.

Re: 4 speed?????

Before you get too wrapped in anything why don't you just call Standard (link in my post above) and tell them you have a 3 speed Saginaw that you either need rebuilt or exchanged for a rebuilt one ? I think you will be very pleasantly surprised with their prices.

They are great folks located in the north side of Ft Worth a few blocks from Billy Bobs.

Re: 4 speed?????

Thanks man, I will for sure check into it. I just took my truck to a shop today. I replaced all the shoes on the front and got the drums cut because it was pulling HAARRDDDDD to the left. Now I need a new hub because the one that's on there now, must've gotten hot because the outter bearing and race area, I don't know what to call it haha, swelled up and when I put the new race in with the new bearing in it, the race was really loose. Almost to the point of it coming out. So I babied it all the way to a shop by my house to get a new hub.

BUT I will most deffently look into that trans shop, thanks for the input

Trust me, if your front drum brakes are acting weird, put new hoses on them. Hoses are cheap. I had plenty of them that worked wonky and it always wound up being the hoses collapsed internally.

Re: 4 speed?????

The SM465 4 speed has a larger front retainer then the 3 speed. It would take a different bell housing. You could put a parts wanted ad in the ad section of this website. Someone might have a good one they pulled out for a swap.

Just a side note: To post a WTB (want to buy) ones needs to be a Site Supporter.

Back to the 3-speed. I also agree that having it rbuilt or purchasing one already rebuilt is the best way. JMHO Sounds like you are getting your truck ready for spring driving.

Re: 4 speed?????

The SM465 is an awesome "hauling and pulling" transmission. I had one in my 1979 GMC 3/4 ton. Loved it...

But if you're lookin' for a "performance" transmission... you might wanna look for somethin' different.

Re: 4 speed?????

Unless you need the granny low, you really won't gain much from the 4 speed. If you can do a rebuild on the 4 speed affordably, do it. You might end up having just as much in the swapping of the 4 speed than rebuilding the 3 spd. Is the clutch the same? Thats some dollars right there unless you were going to replace it anyway.

Re: 4 speed?????

I've got an SM465 in my burb, and I very rarely use 1st gear. I would rather have OD, so I'm swapping to an automatic.

Re: 4 speed?????

I'll give Standard Transmission another bump - I bought my TREMEC TKO500 from them - they beat everyone's price AND service. Plus after swapping things over to the 4spd, getting the high hump, correct bellhousing, a new clutch, driveshaft (the driveshaft shop will recommend new u-joints...) and the your time to do it all (not to mention running around town trying to find whatever small parts you'll need), you would probably not be too far off the cost of rebuilding what you have, and if you have yours rebuilt, you'll know it is good to go, rather that taking a gamble on a well used piece from a tow truck. just my .02
