Gas filler delete - is this stock??!

Hey ya'll,

I popped by to pick up some parts from board member 'uncle' weekend before last. While there, I looked at a couple of the trucks he'd picked up recently, two of which were camper trucks at one time. Obviously, there is no gas tank in the cab for these guys, and I looked at one of the cabs and saw this gas filler delete on the cab. I took some pics with my Blackberry, not the greatest, but you get the idea...

Does anyone know if this is a stock option, if so - where do you get the delete and the gasket used?

I was really interested to see this. I would love to hold off on shaving my gas filler till I'm ready for body work, and I think, in general, if this piece was chromed and you used a flat-head bolt (like a banjo bolt) to secure it, it would look damned good in lieu of shaving.

That is the way my c30 motorhome came to me. I believe it is not factory but done by the motorhome company upfitters. That gasket is the regular tank gasket that the fuel tank neck goes through and if you unscrewed the cap/cover you would find it is just a gas cap with a hole drilled through it. Mine had a block of wood on the back and they used a matching painted wood screw with a tapered final washer, but otherwise is the same.

Or, you could pull the old tank, fill er full of water (so ya don't blow up) and saw off the filler neck and leave the outside looking completely stock and fool a few folks

I've seen people cut off the filler neck and weld a bracket to the back, then bolt it back into the truck. My concern was ... when one of those people figgered out that they got fooled and then dropped a match into the hole (and thus my interior) and burned my truck to the ground

I'd think you'd need to worry more about someone stealing it, then setting it on fire!

A lot of the medium duty trucks (dump) had tanks mounted on the frame rails and had a gas tank hole delete similar to that. I have seen many of them.

I went looking through the Pull-A-Part this weekend and didn't find any of them.

I'm seriously interested in taking this route until I get around to doing my body work.

Why would you use a "banjo" bolt?

Sorry, that was a little unclear. I said "flat head bolt....'like a banjo bolt'..." when i meant "a bolt with a flat head - you know, kinda like the head of a banjo bolt". I would use a flat/smoth headed bolt so nobody could unscrew the bolt from the outside, then remove the cap, reach through the hole, and undo the lock (which I have done in my truck more than once).

Ultimately, in thinking about it, i'd use a square Greenlee knockout punch to bump out a hole, then use a carriage bolt (flat, round head) to secure it.

Carriage bolt can't be spun easily because of the square provision under the head. Also offers a smooth dome to the head.

Ok, going to order a stock replacement gas cap and rubber grommet. If this works out, I'll produce a load and sell them to anyone who wants them at a slight markup.

Why not just tack weld the bolt on from the inside so there is no bolt on the outside?

Then use some kind of loctite on the inside to keep someone from just turning the outside cap off the inside bolt and keep it from rattling off.

This would keep it smooth in appearance.

Good call. Will definitely give this more thought.

If I choose to tack weld, that means the cap and bolt need to both be non-stainless steel, right? (i have a Lincoln 175 that I've only used once or twice so far)

Honestly, I could prevent a carriage bolt and cap from spinning by double-nutting it from the inside.

Why don't you make a bracket similar to the one that holds your new gauges in the instrument cluster?

OBTW, that's the backside of my 3 3/8 fuel gauge, .

make it just spin on the inside so that way if anybody decides to try and take it off all it does is spin but doesnt come out

Shifty do you know if you can use the same gasket or is there a special one you have to get?

I did a temporary fix on mine. Sorry no pics, but it's easy to imagine.

I took the old gasket, cut a piece of antifreeze jug to fit in the hole where the filler neck should be. Then siliconed it into the gasket. Then painted the whole thing black. And popped it right back in. It looks like it almost belongs there. And it'll be OK until this fall, when all the body work gets done.

If your specifically wanting the "deleted" look, then disregard this post. But for an easy fix, you might give it a try.
