What did you get done 5/8/2011 mothers day edition

Its been a big week for me truck related... I sent my son upstate a couple of weeks ago to get my 82 out of mothballs and he and his friend made it about a mile down the hill before it died and he couldnt get it going again ( i know why send the kid to do the job i shoulda done myself) so it sat for two weeks in a local repair shop until they could install a new edelbrock carb and a new battery..
So this past friday i took one of the kids who work for me back upstate and we went and picked it up. Of course the nimrods at the shop didnt set the idle right but we adjusted it so it ran nice and went to the local gas station to fill up both tanks.
Well we get it filled up and sure enough gas starts pouring out the right side tank.and it wouldnt run.. so we switched back to the left side tank and she ran fine.. 250 mil;es or so later we arrived back in NJ with her.
On the trip back we noticed that one of the front tires had a bad wobble to it and she would pull to the right so Saturday morning I ran to the local tire shop and put a fresh set of 31 X 10 1/2 tires on the rear and moved the 31X9s that were on the rear up front. That cured the wobble.
While it was on the lift there we also did a grease and oil change.
I was able to see that the gas leak is coming either from the sending unit and or the gasket for it, so i ordered a whole set up for the right tank.
In addition i noticed my old shocks were completely rusted out and shot so I bought a set of four gas shocks for it and found the idler arm and inner tie rod end on the left side was bad So i bought those parts too.
The parts werent going to be in until today so we spent the rest of the day on the boat.. today i got in my parts and being it was mothers day we went to my moms and had dinner three generations worth of mothers from the family..
tomorrow im hoping to cut off the old bed so i can do the tank and rear shocks easilly and put the new bed on thats been sitting in my yard for about three weeks.. then onto the front end work..
How about you all?

Re: What did you get done 5/8/2011 mothers day edition

Had a few bucks burning a hole in my pocket, so I have been on the hunt for a nice round eye. Found a 74 Cheyenne, but it was just far enough away I could not load up and go look after work. I talked with the guy by email and really wiggled him down on the price, despite him telling me 'how nice it really is'. I was not convinced it was an actual 69k original mile truck like he was trying to tell me. Nonetheless I was going to head out with a friend Wednesday after work to go look and possibly buy it, but he called me a hour before work was over and told me he sold it to someone else. The more I talked to him then, I was convinced he was telling me the truth and I missed out on a very nice truck for $1700.

Instead though, I found a nice SnapOn toolbox for sale by a distressed aircraft technician. Got a nice roller cabinet (13 drawer, 53" wide) FULL of tools (snapon, mac, sioux) for $2000. I still was not able to combine my two craftsman boxes to the snapon box, but I am a lot more organized now.

Gave my wife her mothers day cards and present, she went out for the most part of the day with her mom and did some shopping. We went and ate a nice dinner with her parents, had some of the best baby back ribs ever.

Re: What did you get done 5/8/2011 mothers day edition

Decided to rebuild my quadrajet (running rough and leaking gas) and put new spark plugs in. While the plugs were out and I had the carb off, I ran a compression check on all 8 cylinders.....pretty good news that all readings were 145-150 psi. Got everything back together and took it for a ride....omg...what a difference. Runs great and accelerates like a new truck. That may be the best $50 bucks I spent on my truck and learning the carb rebuild was fun with my Cliff Ruggles book at my side the whole time. Hey maybe I will get some improvement in gas mileage.

Got my shop press together and started pushing bushings. Took me a while to get things done. And I did a little damage, but hopefully I'll get it fixed up okay. It's taking forever to get this stuff done, but I'm cleaning everything and will paint it all up nice before it all goes back together.

In addition to cutting grass, weed-eating, pulling weeds, trimming bushes, organizing my shed, straightening out the garage, and washing the cars/trucks, I managed to work on my 50. Motor mounts are built and the small block is in place along with the transmission. The trans is resting on a jack-stand until I can build a x-member.

Most productive weekend I've had in a while.

Got my 400sb for my blazer all ready to go in and had to go and get a part that I forgot them realized the ground was still to soft from irrigating the orchard for my grandpas truck so I couldn't get my blazer pulled to the garage to install the engine
That's what I get for parking it so close maybe next weekend

Bought an old car trailer last year cheap. Ripped all the old boards off. Had it sandblasted and I took it to our shop on Saturday and painted it mysef. Got all new lights for it and new Pressure treated wood. Should have it all back together in a few days.

Just got done installing my lokar throttle cable. It is an upgrade i would recommend to any one. The throttle feels much smoother and it looks better. Will be taking the truck to my buddys tranny shop tomorrow to install the tv cable on the 700r4 and get it perfrectly dialed in.

Re: What did you get done 5/8/2011 mothers day edition

Tore down and parted out two old junky crewcabs. One was bare frame with cab and bed, the other a patched together complete truck with no engine or tranny. Ended up with a good pair of bucket seats, a tilt '77 column, an '85 tilt/cruise column, a '77 factory sliding rear glass, a perfect '85 hood and a perfect pair of dually fenders with fillers. Sold frames and scrap for more than I paid for both, plus got to keep all the spare parts.
Oh, and found a 1,000 peso coin in the '77. Figured it was worthless and started to toss it, but decided to put it in my pocket...found out it's worth $85. I'm betting I can find a way to pi$$ that off

Re: What did you get done 5/8/2011 mothers day edition

Did the customary Mother's Day with the wife and family. Was occupied with power-washing the deck to look like new again like the wife was wanting and got the place mowed and trimmed for her to enjoy this week-end as well.

Also been busy with some major tree cutting and clean-up around fence rows, taking out the old in preparation for a new pasture fence, in anticipation for some 'hamburger helpers' arriving soon to keep it "mowed" this summer. (that will save some fuel!)

Did get some truck time later today. Almost have the dash installed. It's actually turning out better than I expected and a lot nicer than what I had.
Before:

After:

Still have some adjusting and tweaking to some details on the dash and other interior parts before completion but at least it is going back together. (been over a month)

Just been a longer than planned truck project once again...which I've learned is often the norm when working on any older vehicle. Yet the occasional lesson in patience is never a bad thing though.

That looks killer good work man! I've been looking for a flat blue or green to paint an s series. I've looked at all the blues on the hot rod flatz website and apparently they just don't do them justice. What color is that?

That is awesome! Got a close up of a spot?

Didn't work on my junk any. I cleaned the gutters on my mom's house for her, and inspected a couple spots that need repaired.

I did sit down and did some turbo charger calculating. I figured out a GT35 will give a good solid efficient single turbo setup in the range I'm looking to do for my 6.5L Diesel. I also did some inspecting of other peoples turbo setups and I got my basic pipe routing figured out. I am going to make headers that aim low, and forward with V-Bands. Then I am going to run the pipe so the turbo is on the passenger side in front of the engine with the exhaust outlet aiming back, and the compressor outlet only needing a very small piece of tubing to go to the intercooler. I figure if I do this right if I decide to switch to twins on the 6.5 later, I can hang onto the piping for another project. Turbo 350SB anyone?
