help running exaust
I need help from the guys that have cut holes in thier crossmember. I too have cut and welded a 41/2 in. pipe. My question is, how did you run your exaust? Did you put the mufflers before the crossmember? How did you run it out the back? Pitchers would help. Thanks for any input. Mike

Mine is run through the holes with Flowmaster 50 series under the bed, pipes are run over the axle and on either side of the underbed fuel tank and exit at the bed corners hidden from view. You have to look for the exhaust to find it, the turndowns are just about even with the edge of the bedside.
Next time I get my truck back on the lift I will take some pictures. |

In these pics I still have the mufflers in front of the x-member, but I am going to move them behind the x-member. Otherwise, the rest it will remain the same.

Hey glock, that is an excellent way to route the exhaust, all nicely tucked away. Too bad that I don't have a rear coil spring system to incorporate your design.

No headers, just Vette ramhorns. It's kind of hard to see in this pic, but the arrow is pointing to the the pipe coming out of the drivers side manifold right where it turns to head straight back.
I come through (or near to) Vernal about once every couple of years when I run parts to, or do inspections at the Bonanza Power Plant out there!

That is cool! Maybe we can meet up next time you're out this way. I use to live right behind Putnam Elementary several years ago.
I went to headers to increase airflow, I wonder if the old ramhorns are more or less restrictive? (I may still have a set hanging around) |

It has been kicked around here for years, but the general consensus seems to be that a set of Corvette ram horns (2.5" outlet) will flow equally if not better than an average set of headers. When mine are done, they will have been smoothed and ceramic coated.

I will perform a search on some flow numbers, maybe the ramhorns were the way to go in the beginning. I would love to get the ramhorns put back on.

Hey glock thanks for the picters. Just wondering why you want to move your mufflers? Also your trailing arms look like they come close to your exaust, they won't hit?

I was warned, but didn't listen at first. If I left them, they would be right under the seat. That would make for more noise and more heat. I can eliminate that just by moving them behind the x-member, under the bed.
Nothing hits anywhere too bad. I removed the springs and shocks and let the frame sit on the axle. One or two GOOD bumps will make up the last little bit of clearance needed.

glock how did you route the exhaus through the cross member. what mods did you have to do. i want to do the same thing youve done but i want to put a x-pipe in.

I just used 1/4" plate, not pipe. Pipe is a little overkill, unless you like the looks of it when it's done. 1/4" plate will add back more strength then what there was to begin with. Either will work.

I have heat shields over them now, but they in no way could have the same effect as completely moving them behind the cab.

It looks like there might be exhaust support coming from the trans crossmember right in front of the mufflers but I could be wrong. Either way it is an awesome setup. Did you weld the plates on both sides of the crossmember or just the back side?

Mister laugh - There are hangers on the trans crossmember, the rear upper shock crossmember, and on the frame where they turn to the outside of the frame.
royo - I just cut them out of 1/4" plate. Nuttin special. greasy68 - I fully welded the rear, but I think I just stitched it along the front.

for the guy asking about an X pipe
The x part does hang below the frame but it still higher than the bottom of the trailing arm crossmember. I could have put it closer but this way I have plenty of room to remove the driveshaft. Didn't have quite so much space over the axle as glock so I had to go sideways |
