Rear end identification

I'm not up on 3/4 ton stuff and for the life of me I do not remember where I got this from.
It was hiding by a boat I'm giving to a buddy. Cleaning out the barn and bunker, I'm finding so much stuff I've forgotten I had it's just stupid.

Re: Rear end identification

I wonder if that was under my old 68 K20? Would that make sense?

Does it have any value, or is it scrap?

Re: Rear end identification

That would make perfect sense, Mark. A few things for them can be hard to find... Brake drums & gearsets, iirc, and there are no tall gear ratios for high speed highway running. For that, you'd need an overdrive trans. Some guys prefer to swap them out for more common diffs with more ratios available. Bearings, seals, & most brake parts are readily available. They have a bit more ground clearance than most other diffs, and best of all they are tough as nails, damn near unbreakable. No clue what they might be worth but I would think there are buyers out there.

Re: Rear end identification

Looks to be an HO72 dual wheel, drums anyway. How wide is it. Looks too wide for a cab & chassis rear. If you are talking about your GMC you got from Livrat, that would have come with a Dana60. Yes it has value. As mentioned above parts are getting hard to find, so good for parts even if no one wants it to install. There will always be people wanting to keep a truck original. And, these rears, if kept lubed, will last forever. If one breaks its due to lack of maintenance, such as not replacing a leaking seal or contaminated gear lube. Also, check to see if it's a No-Spin. That is wprth more than a 14-bolt rear.

Not from Livrat. I'm thinking its from a 68 K20 I got many years ago.

Re: Rear end identification

Well it doesn't sound like it has any sort of great value so it will go when I finish the scrapper pile.

Re: Rear end identification

Put it up on stands and spun. One goes forward the other goes backwards.

Took off the cover and snapped a pic of the numbers on case anyone was curious.

Re: Rear end identification

It breaks my heart hearing someone is going to throw away an Eaton HO... A little piece of me just died. Give it to someone that can use it please, those are god's gift to rear ends. If only you weren't 7 days away... Lol

I am sorry for causing you heartbreak and killing a little piece of you. I have no problem just giving this away ... to the first person that can clean and jerk it over their head for a ten count. Holy smokes is this thing heavy!

Honestly if anyone local wants it they can have it. I'm not delivering or shipping or anything else that might give me a hernia.

Re: Rear end identification

That is a great rear end - am running 4 of them right now and never will wear them out. Had one under my 72 C30 MoHome and it went well over 200k and was just fine going down the Interstate at 65 - with 4 speed just a bit over 2300rpm. Installed a temp sender through the drain plug - on the hottest AZ road the oil temp was never over about 120 on the gauge. The only thing I have to watch is for leaking seals (what a mess) - have replaced two or three over the years.
