HELP!! Can't find this topic anywhere - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hello, new member here and this site is awesome. Looking forward to help if possible but now I'm the one in need.

68 c10 327. I have an oil leak. I figured out that when I accelerate, the leak come out of the top of the dipstick. I replaced the dipstick assembly and no change.

Suggestions? I'm know the very basics not too experienced, please help.

It's because your truck is upside down.

Welcome to the board. Does it leak when it sits or is it burning it? That's the first thing to find out. If it is when it sits, then first you need to hose your engine down with engine cleaner and that way you can follow the leak to the source.

Can you make the oil come out the dip stick buy reving the engine parked or is it under load driving down the street? Sounds like excessive crank case pressure. I'm sure the SBC gurus will chime in. Do you have a lot of blow by? Pull the PCV value from the valve cover while it's running. Is the a lot air coming out? Is the PVC valve clogged. I,m not an SBC expert so not sure exactly what causes excessive crank case pressure.

In any motor it's caused by bad sealing or broken rings.

I agree with excessive blow by (bad piston sealing of any kind). Enough pressure to cause oil to blow out of the dipstick can be caused by either that or a PCV valve stuck closed. If the situation occurs on acceleration you can be sure that the crankcase pressure is going through the roof. Age and component failure can both be concerns. So it doesn't matter if its old, new or somewhere in between.

Sounds like the crankcase may be pressurized. May wanna check your PCV system.

I dont see a pcv system in the picture jsut beathers you need a pcv system hooked up or you will blow oil right out of it

Is it me or is there something very strange about that picture. Sure looks like the brake booster and master cylinder, air conditioning, and Battery are out of place. I might could understand the steering. PCV Valve would be a very good start.

Mashthegas72' i uploaded the picture upside down my mistake.

Everyone else, I blew the Pcv valve and it does move position and appears to be working fine. According to these posts that means nothing good. Seems like the oil leaks when I actually drive the vehicle. Once I clean up the spill and top off the leaked oil I will confirm if that is only when the leak happens.

Welcome

If the PCV Valve is working properly then check the breather caps on the valve covers. The crankcase has to breathe weather it's a closed or open system. LOL!

I figured that's what happened. It actually looked pretty neat how it turned out. I'm sorry I shouldn't have commented on that at all especially with you having issues that are a lot more important. I hope you figure it out and it turns out to be a simple fix.

Take off the valve covers and see if it is sludged-up badly. Is it running so poorly that you may have a broken/or holed piston ?

The engine runs fine, drove it a few times 60 mph and a few times around town. I replaced the valve cover gasket and everything looked good.
I did notice the header gaskets need replacing but I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Too be honest besides this oil leak the truck is a daily driver.

Thanks everyone for yor help and support. Still crossing my fingers but I think I figured out the leak. I repleced the breather on the valve cover. The prior breather had a solid gasket thus defeating the purpose of the breather. I bought a new breather and the gasket was hollow. Drove the truck hard for a few miles, which would previously leak much oil and smoke bad when the oil hit the headers, and that no longer is the case. 1 problem down 999 more to go.

Still crossing my fingers but I think I figured out the leak. I repleced the breather on the valve cover. The prior breather had a solid gasket thus defeating the purpose of the breather. I bought a new breather and the gasket was hollow. Drove the truck hard for a few miles, which would previously leak much oil and smoke bad when the oil hit the headers, and that no longer is the case. 1 problem down 999 more to go.
