Engine Id
Does anyone know how to determine exactly what engine I would have in my truck without being able to see the ID on the back of the block? I bought a 1971 chevy shorty 4x4, and it has a new engine in it but I can't determine what generation 350 it is. I was told it was for a 1995 Chevy from the previous owner. But I believe he didn't know much about much. Any suggestions would be a great help to me.

ive seen it stamped on the front of the block, pass. side behind alt. before. but the one on the back of the block drivers side right behind the intake manifold, is the best one. then again im not too up to date on the later model eng. maybe there another placement.

Get the number off the back of the block behind the drivers side head. Then go to www.mortec.com to get an idea of what you have.

Thanks for all the help. I'm having a hard time seeing it since the engine and the tranny are installed. I've went to pick up a mirror and I'll see if I can do the reflection theory. But thanks for all the help. By the way, this is a fabulous website.

Well I grabbed a mirror and went out there. Thank the lord that it was on the passenger side. There was no way any size mirror was going to fit on the driver back side. Well I got the number and went to the site krue told me to go to. I have a gerneration I block that was built for a 95-00 vortec 350. At least I have a decent motor on an older truck. I'll be putting a lift as well and 33's on it really soon. I'll also put a 700r4 in it. Just wish I new a transmission shop in phoenix that will do it. Everyone I call says it is too much work. I'll post and update with pictures as I go along. Keep truckin everyone.

If you need some help on the swap let me know or some of the other phoenix area members. It should not be that difficult especially if it is not a daily driver right now which means if you have to take more than one weekend to swap, no problem.

Ozzyracing where about do you live? Have you done the swap before? I had one done on a 72 and I loved it. I know all you need is to move the tranny mount and transfer case mount back. Make the front shaft longer and dick drive shaft has a yoke for that. The rear shaft needs to be made shorter. I assume I could also do that at dick's. I'm all for doing it myself with some help. That is really the only way to learn and can save a ton of money.
