l replaced my starter with one from AutoZone (#DL3635S) yesterday. After starting her up there was a tinny ticking sound. I removed the flywheel cover and saw that the flywheel was very lightly making contact with roller on the starter shaft.

If the starter could go inward just slightly it would clear the flywheel. There are no bushings or shims installed, and the two bolts holding the starter in place offer no lateral adjustment.

Picture shows where flywheel is contacting starter.

Has anyone else experienced this? The truck was 28 years old when I bought her, only God knows if the flywheel and bell housing are original.

Can't you shim it downward so the flywheel doesn't contact it -(instead of inward)
Shimming those starters was not only common, but manditory- go back to auto-zone and look in the HELP section and find the "Starter Shims"
Unless I am misunderstanding what is happening, I think this will fix your problem.

I understand what you are saying, but my starter mounts with two horizontal bolts into the bellhousing. If they were verticle your shims would work.

I could try loosening the bolts and try prying downward and see if there is any play. Hmmm. . . I'll go play.

Let me know if anyone else has any suggestions.

Too late for my suggestion. If you have the original starter (or one that works anyways) when you replace it keep the nosecone and use it. Ask me how I learned that lesson.

There is always the chance that the crankshaft main bearing is worn and allowing the crankshaft to walk. I had this problem on a 400sb with a real heavy clutch.

The picture I showed was just to show where the rub was, my starter is still mounted on the truck.

The crankshaft walking, I do have a minor rear leak, but no other indications are present. The engine was rebuilt 95K ago.

The starter was replaced and this problem occured only yesterday.

Does anyone think there would be a problem with that little bushing to clear the flywheel?
The bushing floats on the shaft and I suppose it's only purpose is to prevent the starter gear from extending out to far, am I right? ? ?

No, no spare parts. . . The original or the one I took back to AZ nose was identicle to this one. I'm begining to think it's an AZ FUBAR.

That little ring is a retainer for a snap ring inside that fit in a groove in shaft. It is what keeps the armature from moving forward plus stopping the starter gear.
