Question Topic: Door Handles

I have a a bunch of decent door handles that I've dug out of my garage. But I can't figure out which number / type goes to the manufactured years. I 've looked at my NOS sets and got even more confused.

The number is stamped on the inside of the handle:

1. RH handle/ long shaft/ #392898 - What years: 67?

2. LH handle/ short shaft/ #392897 - What years: 68-72?

The number on the boxes are all different but the handles are stamped the above two numbers. So, I assuming GM continued making the same handles by number but changed the box number in accordance with the application. I also read where the 67-68 handles were drilled/ tapped at a different angle. Does anyone have the correct GM part numbers to each type/year handle?

Any clarification would be helpful...

Wonder if I have to cut the long shaft on #392898 to make it useable on a 68-72 door? Hmm...

Thanks David

Re: Topic: Door Handles

The 67 was different than the 68-72. The longer shaft you are talking about has nothing to do with the years. A suburban rear door used nearly the same handle as a truck but the shaft was longer. I have an old original parts book that says you may be required to cut the shaft to size. This way they could make only one handle and let the customer cut it down to size.
