Diff I.D.

Can a rear differental be identified as postitive traction without taking off the cover. I know on my existing truck that while the manual trans is in neutral and the rear end jacked up while turning one wheel the other doesn't turn, but with the transmission in gear the wheels will turn in opposite directions. I am looking at a trans that the owner says is supposed to be a posi, but isn't sure. I don't think he would be to agreeable to removing the cover and draining the oil. Thanks

not an expert

with both rear wheels off the ground, transmission in neutral, emergency brake off (chock front wheels both sides) , and engine NOT running -- by hand turn one side forward or backward and the opposite wheel should turn the SAME direction by itself.

If not posi, the opposite wheel will turn the opposite direction. Could be wrong. 8-)

Put trans in neutral, block front wheels, E-brake off, just jack up one rear wheel and
see if it spins. If it spins, she no gotta posi. Also, crawl under the truck and inspect
the rear end housing. All limited slip differentials, no matter what make they are will
leave the factory with a tag saying "USE LIMITED SLIP GEAR LUBE ONLY".
