Spindle Wheel Bearing Help Please
I was trying to put on my rotors last night and ran into a little problem. The inner wheel bearing fits good on the with the rotor, but there is too much slop on the spindle.
I have a 70c10, but I am using '84 spindle and brake components. I went to autozone this morning, the '84 inner wheel bearing is what I have and it does not work. Basically I need a smaller inner diameter inner wheel bearing with the same outside diamater. Sounds confusing huh? Any suggestions? Anyone have a diagram for this setup? |

Re: Spindle Wheel Bearing Help Please
You have the wrong bearing for the spindle. This means the bearing or the spindle aren't what you think they are. Or the auto parts store goofed.
Did you take the rotors and spindles off the donor vehicle? Do you still have the old bearings and races? Did they fit properly? If the answer to the above questions is yes, use the numbers on the old bearings to purchase your new ones.

Re: Spindle Wheel Bearing Help Please
If you wipe the grease off of the bearing, there should be the manufacturers part number listed on the outer or inner face of the bearing. If you have this number, the parts store can cross-reference the bearing with every manufacturer and find you the correct replacement.

I don't have the original bearings, just the new one that does not fit properly, which is labeled "LM48548"

Re: Spindle Wheel Bearing Help Please
There are A3's for the outside, and either A5's (thicker spindle, 1.375) or A6's (thinner spindle 1.25) for the inner part. Sounds like you have A6's, and need to get A5's.
I ran into the same problem. 73+ rotors are the same as 71-72, and there were both HD and LD brakes back then, so that's why there's 2 different thicknesses of spindles. These are BCA numbers. Last edited by Jim_PA; 06-13-2007 at 01:52 PM. |

Re: Spindle Wheel Bearing Help Please
nartkers - when we talk about 1 inch vs 1.25 inch we are talking rotor thickness not spindle diameter. Somewhere in the 80's GM introduced light duty brakes using 1 inch thick rotors. Everything associated with light duty brakes is different - the spindle, the bearings, the rotor, the caliper and the pads.

Re: Spindle Wheel Bearing Help Please
I got conversion spindles from ECE, and just measured them before ordering my parts... this should help:
BCA/NATIONAL Part # A6 {Cone Length=0.465" Bore=1.25" Outer Diameter=2.328" Width=0.625 StoundOut=0.16" Cup Length=0.465"} Front Wheel; Inner; (L/D Brakes) BCA/NATIONAL Part # A5 {Cone Length=0.55" Bore=1.375" Outer Diameter=2.5625" Width=0.71 StoundOut=0.16" Cup Length=0.55"} Front Wheel; Inner; (H/D Brakes) so the spindle diameter should be about 1.25 if you need the A6, or 1.375 if you need the A5
