Question original bed color?

My LWB 70 has the original wood in the bed, and for being almost 40 years old, is in pretty good shape. My question for all is: What color (if any) was the original finish on these? The reason I ask is I power washed the surface to start prepping it for refinishing (I'm going to sand/seal it with Thompson's water sealer to get a few more years out it before I replace it), and there is body colored paint on the wood. Most likely it come from a sloppy repaint that was done long before I became it's keeper, but nothing is out of the realm of possibilities. I learned to drive in my Dad's 67 GMC 1/2 ton,(back in '75, 11 years old, oh those were the days) but it had a steel bed, so don't know. Can anyone remember? Cnut

Re: original bed color?

Thompsons water seal is pretty much worthless anymore. There's tons of other products that out preforms it.
One of the best is Sikkens during my attempt to find a link I found this instead. LINK Note where Thompsons listed at

Re: original bed color?

I know in 1972 and probably in 1970 too that the wood was painted body color for sure. Most everybody who restores one of these trucks stains the wood because it looks good, but the General did not do it that way.

Re: original bed color?

the bed wood is painted body color from the factory. they assembled the bed and sprayed the whole thing as they would have if it had a steel floor.

Re: original bed color?

So, if the wood was painted, what would green stain (body color is med olive) look like? Stain it and seal it, any suggestions? Think this is a crazy idea? Am I smokin crack?Cnut

Re: original bed color?

67 and early 68 had the bed floor in black, then after that, body color.
