Re: pops out of gear?

Try adjusting the linkage and the stops before you submit to the worn syncros.

yeap you can drive it that way. Is it a truck four speed with the shifter coming out the top. or a "car" four speed with seperate shifter. If seperate try adjusting the linkage, if the first, take shifter out make sure the ball and socket aren't worn. If they look ok, the syncros are worn most likely
Usually what happens are the struts and springs in the syncro get weak and worn, wont hold it in gear.

Just take it apart carefully just in case. I don't kn ow how your shifter comes out so I can't say for sure. But I would be willing to bet more that it is the syncro's bad rather than the shifter. You should be able to get rebuild parts for those trans. unless your planning on swapping the trans maybe look into getting rebuild parts. www.anaheimgear.com is where I get alot of my parts.

Re: pops out of gear?

To take the shifter out, push down on the top of the round tin surrounding the lever and turn counter clockwise.
