Front Clip removal Q, The Flapper and AC

Hey Folks,

In the process of removing my cowl to do a front clip removal and I noticed this Flapper part that appears to be broken. Something to do with the AC I'm guessing. I did not see it in the Brother's catalog;

What's it's purpose and are these reproduced?

Also in reference to my last pic;

Is this where I need to disconnect the AC to pull the front clip?

Thanks for any and all responses....Henry

Re: Front Clip removal Q, The Flapper and AC

That is your fresh air intake flapper. It needs to be closed when the A/C is running, and open when the heater is running. (short answer) I do not believe the flapper is reproduced. No worries, they are abundant in the local pick n pull yards.

Yes, that is where you disconnect the A/C if you are pulling the doghouse.

NP. By the way, is that Wienermobile in your avatar local? I have seen one several times on the 10 fwy. near Ontario.

No that is pic off the net, although I have seen one on occasion going up the 605 by Whittier. I remember when "Lil' Oscar" used to come around to the local supermarkets and give out whistles and stuff. Back in the day-o.....

Re: Front Clip removal Q, The Flapper and AC

If I was going to open up a charged AC system I wouldn't do it there. Legally you should have it recovered.
Back in the day a mechanic would crack open the big nut on the back of the POA valve. When it was legal you wanted to vent the freon to the atmosphere slowly so no oil would rush out with it.

Once it is discharged you can open those two lines up under the battery tray.

AH the joys of the 67-72 Message board....

Thanks to all and to the heads up about bleeding out the AC system(MREIN)...I forgot to ask about that and appreciate that you brought it up.
Kudos for the LMC info and link as well! Henry
