shortening frame and bed???
I know there has to be a sticky or a thread already on this. Not trying to open a new one or start over but i'm having a horrible time finding anything and the stuff i do find is overly confusing. Can anybody send me a link or to a sticky so i can try to figure out how to shorten my frame and bed on my long bed to convert over to a short bed. Im trying to figure out if my C-Notch in the frame will affect where i cut or if its still possible. Thanks guys

Re: shortening frame and bed???
The cut will be under the cab. Really easy to do. Somewhere is a link to a "how to" I think.
Some people will tell you it will end up in a dumpster, but unless you are a complete idiot that can't follow directions, or use a tape measure, it is pretty hard to screw up.

Re: shortening frame and bed???
You can leave the cab on and make the cut behind it as well. Here's the story of my '68 where I shortened a longbed frame...
http://www.customclassictrucks.com/t..._c10_shortbed/ Like mentioned above, pretty simple if you can read a tape measure and weld. I didn't even attempt to cut the sheetmetal down. Way too much work in my opinion and there are better options out there if your bed sides are rough. Good luck! |

Re: shortening frame and bed???
No if you cut behind the cab you would not have to move the cab mounts , the reason for the cut under the cab is that you have room to do a overlap cut like pictured in the thread I posted of the guy that did the green 68 thats the very best way to do it , but now let me say this , I do not recomend it ! I would get a shortbed truck , but done correctly it can be fine to shorten a longbed ,,,,

Re: shortening frame and bed???
This pic shows why you want to do the cut under the cab

Re: shortening frame and bed???
If you make the cut where I did, it bisects the cab mount So yes, you'll need to remove the mount and reattach it. No big deal, but it is extra work. Now, it was a lot easier than removing the cab and front clip. I didn't want to do a complete frame-off at the time (though in the long run I may as well have! lol).
I like the 'S' cut and all that, but a good ol' 45-degree cut is all it takes to do the job properly. I think the key here is knowing what your capable of and doing a nice job. That 'S' cut could cause a lot of problems if the person making the cut gets a little too happy with the saw, etc. Ever try to make 4 perfectly curved cuts with a Sawzall? Just cut it straight, fish plate it on the inside, and box the entire section. Done and done. Good luck! |

Re: shortening frame and bed???
nolimitengineering.com sells a conversion kit that bolts on after you cut the frame. I haven't found any information about actual installation on this forum but I'm very curious because I am looking at doing the same thing.

Re: shortening frame and bed???
Here are the ones I plan to follow. Also a good tip, start a spread sheet to keep track of stuff you find or put it in your favorites within your browser. Sounds easy but more times than I can think of I forget and spend hours looking for it again, I had these two saved.

That shop heater in the first picture is supposed to be mounted near the ceiling, not the floor. Strange way to store your truck too. |
