Anyone know how to dismantle hood?

In the front and rear of the hood are the supports that all the bolts and latches- etc. attach to. Anyone know if they can be seperated from the hood skin? Looks like a few rivets on the front support (the one with the latch). I would imagine there are welds somewhere along the front- prob near the edge. I need to get the whole front support or core (whatever you want to call it) out.

Anyone done this- walk me through it if you could?

Re: Anyone know how to dismantle hood?

Spot welds, lots of spot welds along the edge that faces down when the hood is closed.

Re: Anyone know how to dismantle hood?

You will have to use sandpaper or wire brush to reveal the spot welds they are about every inch all along the bottom edge, then use a 1/8 drill bit drill the center, then change out to a 1/4 inch drill bit and just drill enough to clear the spot weld, I`m getting ready to weld in a new ..(old ) lower valance in mine as mine had rusted thru....where the lower valance and the hod sheet metal meet there should be a weep hole in the foward section to alow water to escape. Mine was plugged. I will install mine with a full weld, ( filling the seam ) and spot welding the lower section at the side.

Re: Anyone know how to dismantle hood?

My question is how do you dismantle the front brace and valance of the hood and get it back together without welding the seam? In other words as close to stock as possible...

You see the valance panels everywhere now so someone's done it or might be doing it soon.

I will be trying this repair soon too.

thanks

I think you would need to use 2 hoods, some of the spots are in places that you can't get a drill, or regular welder...
so cut the rusty lower portion off under the seam, then you can access and drill out all the spots, then cut the repair panel out over the seam from a donor hood, do the same with the spots,in some places where you can't get the welder, you might be able to bolt it together, or you could try the panel bonding adhesive.. also I think Eastwood makes a spot weld tool with a 2 foot reach, that might be an option.

Re: Anyone know how to dismantle hood?

Any updates on this? I am looking to replace the lower patch panel on the hood. Is it possible without utilizing the upper patch panel? I have a nice louvered hood and don't want to cut it up to much.

Re: Anyone know how to dismantle hood?

Sorry. I should have clarified. I was speaking to removing the entire lower valence of the hood and replacing it with a repop patch. Mine is Swiss cheese in select spots, but overall still in great shape. I was hoping, because I already purchased the patch a year or so ago, someone had figured out how it magically welds in.

I could create patches for each spot, but was hoping to save time and replace the whole thing. So far, it doesn't appear as replacing the whole thing is an option due to where the underside spot welds need to be located.

Re: Anyone know how to dismantle hood?

And there is the inner panel that is also part of all those welds. I have a hood here that is need of the front fixed. The problem I have is the piece behind the front panel is as bad as the rest of the front. No need to even try to fix the hood. Now that they make a complete hood it would be really a big plus to get them to sell that back panel. I am sure they would sell great.

Re: Anyone know how to dismantle hood?

I replaced my lower part of hood, also removed braces and blasted them then put in epoxy before re-assembling it. Finished off by seam sealing seam. It is in my thread

Re: Anyone know how to dismantle hood?

The panel bond adhesive is a good easy fix. No welding. SEM makes a really good one . Available at most stores that sell paint and body supplies. I used it on my repair and it was quick and easy. Just sayin.

Agreed. Just disassembled my hood and I don’t think I have the patience to try and save this. Swiss cheese along the entire bottom edge. I guess I will be looking for a donor hood. With no guarantee that it will be any better...

Re: Anyone know how to dismantle hood?

Mmm idk that this is a candidate for that. There is not a lot of quality metal to even weld patches to around that area. But I may need to figure out how to do my best. I just don't want to do this repair again, so I’d like to replace it. However, I’m not sure how many donor hoods for just this piece are out there. Especially without rust in the same area...and are not extremely expensive. Thanks for the help.

Although I never got a pic, the body shop used both upper and lower on the front of my hood.
