Help Needed - Parting Value
Most of you may or may not want to divulge all of your secrets so I will
understand if you don't reply. I have been considering parting out stuff as a side opportunity to get work done on my rigs. I have the space (I have 20 acres) but I fear my location can hurt me. (Western TN) What I was wondering is this, is there a general rule of thumb you all use? If I was to get this truck below, sorry no pic, what would you offer based on my description? I do not think it salvagable as a whole and would be only intersted in it to make a few bucks towards working on my project. Thanks in advance for any help that you have chosen to give me below 1968 LWB FLEETSIDE FRONT CLIP 4.10 POSI REAR 4 SPEED TRANNY No idea on the motor or the rest of the options, but with that said, even if it's ruff, what kind of value could I put on that? Thank you again, Craig

Re: Help Needed - Parting Value
Keith, sounds about right, over the last 2 years I have had some incredible
deals, but no buyers, that's why I am hesitant to go after this whole truck. I keep thinking I can sell stuff, but I don't. I just sold a 6 lug leaf rear with a 4.10 for $20. I had it for sale for almost 6 months before anyone bought it. I know I gave it away, but I was just glad to finally move it out of here.

Re: Help Needed - Parting Value
craig, is that parts truck a 1/2 ton, or 3/4?
If that 4.10 is in an eaton HO52, I can sell them for 100 - 125 all day long it seems... PLUS shipping. |

Re: Help Needed - Parting Value
I could use a lwb fleetside passenger bedside and a posi, but it would need to be shipped to VA. I don't know who would ship it. Maybe a furnature moving company?

Re: Help Needed - Parting Value
When I consider buying a parts truck the first thing I do is figure out what I am going to pull of and keep for my projects. Then I look at the rest of the truck and crunch numbers. If it comes up that I can more than double the cost of the truck after selling the parts, it may be worth it. Making you self available to ship parts makes it a lot easier to move them.
Remember this though, the more time you spend on parts trucks, the less you spend on your own.

The only way i have found to sell the rear ends is part them and scrap the housing. The posi's are always a easy sale and sometimes the gear sets depending on ratio. The rest i scrap since no one likes to pay truck freight prices. That always hurts on any big items. And everyone who is interested is always to far away. Hope this helps. Jason P.S. Don't forget to also add what you'll get for scrap price on what remains when you get all the good parts off it. I got $95 for the last one i took in with no motor, trans, and rear end. At the time they were paying $70 a ton.

Well you have been around way long enough to know what you are doing parting trucks.
If not, take a look at how Randy-teeitup is set up and operates. He has a well run operation. |

Re: Help Needed - Parting Value
True, I have been on here a while, but I have never parted trucks. All I've
ever done is sold excess parts I replaced on my own rigs. I hate to buy it, strip it, and then crush it. (I have never been a fan of that idea) So, this looks like it might not be a very good idea then, I guess she will just rust. Thanks to everyone that replied, Craig

Re: Help Needed - Parting Value
THANKS Frank, I appreciate what you said!!!! I try my best.
Craig, the one thing some people do not think of is, that if there wasn't guys like me who buy them, strip them, then crush them, others would not have parts to fix up their rides. If no one buys them for parts then the trucks end up getting crushed and no one gets any parts off of them. It happens more than anyone thinks, I see our years trucks headed to scrap alot, I just can't chase them all down. Good luck in whatever you decide, Randy

Re: Help Needed - Parting Value
Huck, is right too. It takes alot of time parting, boxing and getting shipping prices etc. I make a little extra money doing it but as he said not much for my time. BUT I like doing it, keeps me out of trouble (out of the beer). It has slowed down alot in the last 2 years, not as many guys buying parts it seems.

I cant agree more With what Randy has said. At the swap meet the other day a guy asked why I am stripping these trucks down and not saving them. I simpley explaned that by stripping the forgoten and bad ones, I am saving the ones that are loved. But you wont get paid for you time like the others have said. I do it because I need to stay busy, dont enjoy the TV, can drink beer while doing it and I could use the few extra $ that I do get.

Re: Help Needed - Parting Value
You can buy a parts truck, pull all the good stuff off it and then scrap it. the cost to get it, the time to disassemble it and the time/aggrivation to try to sell the decent parts for a reasonable profit-----??!! Part of the issue is that with so many parts in reproduction with cheap China manufacturing~~~parting out trucks is not really worth the effort unless your time is worth NOTHING. Those who have done a lot of parting---have pretty much backed out of that hobby as the ROI is just not there any more. My .02
Met a guy in Orange County Ca who has parted out hundreds of 67-72 trucks. He paid a bounty to guys to find them, he paid guys minimum wages to part them out---trashed out the common stuff, sold the good sheet metal, and wholesale sold big block to an exporter to Australia @ $500. ea. He did this for years but gave up as the Tiwan metal quality improved. No money to be made now. |

Re: Help Needed - Parting Value
I did this for almost two years until I didn't have a place to store the trucks anymore, the way I saw it was if I could get into a truck for less than $500 bucks that was to my place I could make that up easy enough. It is really easy if you have a place to store the vehicles and the parts once you pull them off. There are a ton of parts that I didn't sell because I would sell the remaining parts truck with lots of stuff on it still. Had I stripped them to the frame with pics and stuff I could have made more money. It never hurts to stockpile these trucks.

Re: Help Needed - Parting Value
I'll have to keep an eye out for you Luv. I'd be interested in the 4.10 posi for the right price (I have no clue what the "right price" is ) But my Grandparents live near Martin, so I could have an excuse to visit them if I came and picked it up

Remember the stepside that you had to give away. It even had a running motor in it...

Re: Help Needed - Parting Value
It's no way to get rich thats for sure. I sold Vette parts for years and that was a good business as people want it cheap and realize there is no such thing and buy the parts at the $$$ or sell their Vette.
Trucks are a different market and a different clientle. I would not hesitate to buy a donor for a project and pull and sell a bunch of stuff for give away prices to pay for the truck and get my parts for free. Past this I think the process is just away to make yourself miserable. esll.

Re: Help Needed - Parting Value
Rich, lol, not planning on getting that out of it, I just need some play $
for use with the toys. (We don't use our family budget on truck parts) I do remember the stepside, kinda why I am hesitant to try doing this.

Re: Help Needed - Parting Value
If you do part it out and do good at it, come down and pick up a few of mine. I have sold most of the v-8's which well covered the cost of each truck, but I can't find the time to sell much more off of them.
As far as what it's worth to pay for it, well I can't say what I paid for mine, cause everyone would hate me.
