Steering Gear Box
So I took my 72 K10 up to the shop yesterday to have a wheel alignment and tire rotation done... They said they couldn't do it because it needs a new gear box. Is there a difference in a 2wd gear box and a 4wd gear box for a power steering truck?

Re: Steering Gear Box
Yes they are different. The 2WD one uses a nut to hold the pitman arm on and the 4X4 uses a pinch bolt.

RB72
Here is a link that might help. I met them at a swap meet a while back and they seem to really know these trucks. http://www.powersteering.com/

Re: Steering Gear Box
There are many people that are competent to rebuild your current box.

Re: Steering Gear Box
What would be the point to rebuild it for $269.00 if you can buy a new one for less than that?

Re: Steering Gear Box
Where can you buy a "new" one?
The links above are for rebuilt units. I've personally rebuilt at least a hundred boxes. The kit is $25. With the right tools it's not too difficult. Rarely have I seen a box that is not rebuildable. And those have been run low on fluid for a long time.

Re: Steering Gear Box
These guys build an awesome quick ratio box with great road feel. You can buy from them or Summit Racing. I used a conversion kit to install their 68-74 box on a 66 C10. Made it the best steering old car or truck I have ever driven.

Re: Steering Gear Box
I just installed AGRs variable ratio gearbox. Assist when you need it, as stated great road feel. When I ordered it and spoke to them they explained the difference as quick ratio = one finger steering: variable ratio = steering with the palm of your hand. Yup, next to a/c (living in S. TX), the best upgrade I've done to my truck.
