air bags hitting the bump stops!!!!!
I just added front air bags (dominator 2600) in the front end and at the same time swapped out to 72 control arms and hub assy`s for disk brake conversion. Now my bags are hitting the bump stop mounts on the lower control arms when deflated. have you guys run ito this before? I thought I did all my research before tackling this but I never read about this.
Am I gonna have to cut these off or is the bag not sitting right in the lca cup or??????

Re: air bags hitting the bump stops!!!!!
Actually, I asked here several months ago if I needed to cut mine off and the answer I got was a resounding no. Go figure. Mine's not back together yet to see how it works.

Re: air bags hitting the bump stops!!!!!
theres a downward bend at the bump stop mount that the bag hits and it doesnt look like the bag is catching on the metal but rather resting on it. Ill take a pic for you guys and post it in the morning.
All input helps guys!!!

Re: air bags hitting the bump stops!!!!!
Are you laying that thing out, or plan to? That's the same bags as me, and they are HUGE!! I had to cut, and keep cutting lol to get it to lay flat.

I've got soo many rides I forget, but don't these trucks front bumpstops just pull out? From on the truck, can't you grab and pull?

Re: air bags hitting the bump stops!!!!!
Cut it off while its on the truck. A sawzall or a grinder with a cut-off wheel will work. I usually leave the steering stop in place. Some people take the entire bracket off.
Then grind any sharp edges smooth.

Re: air bags hitting the bump stops!!!!!
michael , did you ever get some pics?
i know this is an older thread but i am about to encounter the same problem on my '69 and was about to post a similar question. I have stock control arms and i am going to use dom 2600's. it looks like the bags might hit the hard bump stops and it looks like i need to remove them to get it to lay out. Is this the case? |

Re: air bags hitting the bump stops!!!!!
I cut mine off. I had always heard that you have to cut them off. I'm running Slams RE-7's and supposedly they have an internal bump stop.

Re: air bags hitting the bump stops!!!!!
Heres the pic I got. As you can see, Its pretty obvious the bump stops gotta go. I ended up cutting them off with a sawzall and grinding down smooth.

Re: air bags hitting the bump stops!!!!!
You have to run shocks. The bag itself is just a spring. Just think about taking the shocks off a coil spring truck and how it would ride.

Re: air bags hitting the bump stops!!!!!
No bumpstops for me, they will have air in them when in motion. Stock lcas with plates and cups wasn't very low at all on my truck.

Re: air bags hitting the bump stops!!!!!
I am running shocks. you just cant see from the angle picture was taken. I like my slams very much, no complaints. One other thing, I also had to cut about 3/4 of an inch of the ends of the front sway bar. when aired out, the ends would rub on the bag.
Hey Michael Bustamante, I dont see a sway bar on yours? DZL1. Last edited by DZL1; 10-24-2009 at 12:14 AM. |

Re: air bags hitting the bump stops!!!!!
I used a spot weld cutter an drilled the bracket welds out and used a air hammer to knock the bracket of then ground the control arm smooth.
