Deciding on mufflers

Hey guys I finally got my Headers installed on my 71 P/U it has a 402 BB and the headers are Hooker Comp headers. I was wondering what mufflers I should go with. I want a good throaty sound. I will have 3 in stainless steel exhaust running on the truck. Let me know what yall think.

loaded question but ill tell you that im 110% partial to good ol 40 series flows. if i trade my 91 for the 72 that im looking at it will have a 3" exhaust w/ 40 flows before it gets home in my driveway lol

I have Magna Flows, low quiet rumble just driving around and open right up when you get on it. They are perfect I think.

I have the Cherry Bomb Turbo mufflers and really like the sound.

I have full length headers on my big block, X pipe and dual Super 44's all the way out the back. I love the throaty sound but I also love flowmasters. Also the closer the muffler to the header the louder it gets (mine are under the bed area) The straight pipe / H pipe / X pipe effects the sound as well we where you want the tips to exit. Out the side before the wheel shorter pipe / Pointed at the ground under the truck / all the way out the back. Thats what makes this such a loaded question. so many factors. Maybe stop by a few local exhaust shops and listen to what they are installing. (this changed my mind from 50 series big block to super 44's)

On another note. Why are you going 3"
I did a bunch or reading and asking and remember friends mistakes and went with 2.5" all the way back and 3" tips. the charts I found (which I can't find the links to ) Pointed to 2.5 for best performance for our big blocks Hp and torque. I have seen to large an exhaust on a stock engine slow it down.

Maybe others have more experiance with this.

I just back from the muffler shop I was looking at what they had, the service manager advised me that I should go with a flow master single chamber with 3 in exhaust. He said the mufflers were 259.00 apiece. Does that sound right or should I look at the magna flow? He stated with the single chamber, it will be real throaty and have a good rumble too it.

$259 EACH!?!?!?! I have trouble thinkin' about $100 each much less $500 for a pair.

40's are gonna be really loud at WOT and to me they are just too much....the 50 or 60series are better for those vehicles without a cat to hush it down before the mufflers do their job.

I have 40's, but am tired of them. Talked to a Cherry Bomb rep at the Power Tour. They suggested a 28-inch body, saying the longer the body, the deeper the tone. I can look at my catalog for them and get a part number. I am ready for something else. Is that weird, or what?

Thank yall for the input, I will find out about the 2.5 pipe vs the 3 inch as far as hp and torque are concerned. My engine is a 402 bb, it has a mild cam in it know, aluminum intake, hooker headers etc. I want it to sound great because as of know the exhaust system is going to cost me 1000.00 dollars.

I love the Spintech mufflers. Nice deep tone and very well constructed. I have Sportsman xl's on my 1972 Olds. They make these mufflers in stainless also. Here's a link:

You guys got those fancy big dollar systems. My Exhaust including headers only cost about $200.00. That would buy like, 1 muffler. I guess it all depends on what you want to spend and what your desired end result is.

I have a 406 sb, and went with 2.5" exhaust, X-pipe with two Magnaflow mufflers. Mellow, deep rumble around town and a nice rasp under WOT. Not as loud as the flowmasters, but no drone either. I really like them. Oh yeah, Magnaflows are straight through designed, whereas Flowmasters are not. Depends on what you like...

If you want a deep mellow rumble, I would suggest the 50 series Delta Flow Flowmasters or the Super 40 Flowmasters. Those 1 chamber mufflers are going to be VERY LOUD!! I think for the expense, you'll be sick when it's done. The 1 chamber mufflers are race mufflers. Do you plan to race the truck or just a street bruiser. I know the 50 series mufflers have a low, deep, mellow tone that has a nice low burble at idle and still keeps a mellow tone even when revving and not as rappy like regular 40 series.

I have the Super 40's on my mild cammed small block. They have a deep rumble at idle, but really yell at WOT.

The Monte and Elky have Delta Flow 40's, the white 84 and the red & sliver 83 have regular 40s and my 68 when in black had cheap IMCO turbos.

I remember Classic Trucks had an article a while back about the Hushpower mufflers. They had a set on a truck with a stock small block and they sounded good with the stock engine. But, when they installed a mildy built 383, the Hushpower mufflers sounded horrible. They went and had Flowmaster Super 40's installed and it sounded alot better.

They have that unmistakable rumble, but they reduce the drone. VERY quality.

Avoid flowmasters and glasspacks... especially if you're in the rustbelt.

the aero's sounded pretty nice.
as for what size, you can do 2 1/2 back to the mufflers and then 3" tailpipes. i read in HOT ROD or some mag a long time ago that the pipe before the muffler is what had to be right for the engine and what ever is after the muffler doesnt matter.
i really want to do a 3" myself. will prob. do the above if i get the 72.

i have a warm 383 with dynomax welded race muffler on one side and a 20 dollar thrush turbo on the other (dont ask) and the sound difference is not worth 4 times the money... of course if u have a stock motor, ur gonna have to get high dollar mufflers to get a nice sound...
