Sitting for 35 years

Looks like I am buying a 72 shorty that has been sitting for 35 years. I think I have a good Idea on what needs to be done. I would like to start a discussion maybe someone who has done this already will have some pointers.

The truck is a 72 with 35K on the clock. It is a I6 3 on the tree.

Check to see if the motor is frozen
Check to see if the clutch is rusted

Change oil
Drain and flush coolant
Service rear
Service manual (Do they have drain lugs?)
Crain brake fluid
Disassemble brakes all around, Rebuild calipers and wheel cylinder Replace master cylinder. Replace flex hoses, inspect metal lines, one heck of a stomp test once it done.

Drain fuel tank, Replace rubber fuel lines. Filter

I am sure I am missing some stuff.

I just did this. Found a 67 that had been parked in a field for 30 plus years. After replacing all ignition parts, fuel sending unit, and filters, she fired up. Needs a lot more work before it'll be road worthy, but a great start. I hope you keep posting your progress. Good luck.

Congrats on getting that time capsule bought! Did he take your offer? I'd be interested in seeing some pics of that truck in the raw before you get it cleaned up. Great job.

Belts/hoses vaccum lines, fuel lines. also need to be on the shopping list. Pull the valve cover and check for build up of who knows what I have and have also seen done filling the motor up with diesel or kerosene[lot more costly] and letting sit for a day or so and that will loosen the inside varnish buildup and then pull the drain plug and it will come out with the diesel, but you can tell more about needing that or not by pulling the cover. A carb kit is gonna need to be ordered as well, so start digging around on it for the proper numbers there. Ignition will need to be addressed I would think about an hei and that would get the wires and most of the rest of the tune up stuff done. Don't start buying all this stuff check to see if the motor has oil in it if its over full it may have water in it you won't know until you get it churned up. then try turning it over by hand if it does pull the distributor and prime the oil system starting an engine dry will take out 80% of the bearings life past that see if it has fuel,spark,air,and compression if so it should run set timing you will need to clean the fuel system out too

Ya, He called me tonight. He is such a nice guy. He found most of the original paper work that came with the truck. He even said he had two new tires. We talked for a while he agreed next weekend we are going to see if the motor is frozen and check the clutch and if I can just pull it home on a tow rope or if I will need a flatbed. I am not too worried either way. It only needs to go 800 ft
