Several questions about engine in '68, looking for facts and opinions please.
I took the heads of the engine in my 68 which I was led to believe to be the original 307. The machine shop called me and told me the heads were for a 305 so this brought up a few questions.
1. Will any of the numbers on the block be able to tell me what engine I have? If so, which ones and can anyone on here decode them for me? 2. If it is the 307 with 305 heads would putting 305 heads on there be good bad or indifferent to the performance of the engine? 3. If it is the 307 I plan on keeping it mostly stock but if it is a 305 I was thinking of maybe putting a different intake manifold, a 4 barrel carb and different cam. I already have a pretty good exhaust so what would you recommend for the manifold, carb and and cam? Thanks alot for any help you might be able to provide. -Moneypit

The best thing you can do with a 305 is donate the heads to a 307. All joking aside, it is a great update for the 307. It isn't really performance oriented, but, they are better heads, and modern gas friendly.

One of the numbers you want is on the back of the block (where the bellhousing or trans bolts on) on the drivers side. The other one would be just in front if the passengers side head and should be stamped into a flat machined boss on the block. Write them down and go here to look them up. http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm LockDoc

Re: Several questions about engine in '68, looking for facts and opinions please.
I don't have internet at the house right now so I wrote down all the casting number for the 307's and 305's listed on both mortec.com and nastyz28.com. I will cross reference them when I get home. Thanks for that info.
If it is a 307 with 305 heads it seems this would be a good thing or is that wrong. Once again, thanks alot guys. -Moneypit

Ok, I went home and cleaned up the back of the block and found out I have an 80-85 305. So can anyone reccomend an intake, carb and cam for a mild build up. Not looking for anything fancy just a little more pickup. Maybe something in the $500 and down range(if that's possible). Thanks. -Moneypit
