1969 H-072 Eaton axle width - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Any body know the width on a '69 Eaton H-072 srw truck axle? Did they get wider in '72? Same as a D60/12 bolt? Anyone got any experience with these? Sorry for all the ?'s, I'm thinking about buying one, any info is highly appreciated!!!

Out of curisosity, why you lookin at gettin an HO72? I would get a newer unit personally, one that you'd be able to find parts for... like brakes.
I have the SRW HO72 under my 70 longhorn, and wasn't aple to get jack for it.

Cheap for one, has a detroit and 4.56's already, I've read a little about adapting 14 bolt full floater internals and brakes, supposed to weigh alot less too, so far it seems the stuff's available but pricey but this ones supposed to in in good order. This is why I ask though, not sure yet. I was told they're 63" wide but not certain, would 150$ be a good deal for one?

I'd measure my 70 for you, but it's burried in my storage unit.
As long as you are aware of it's parts issues, you'll be OK. These things are rock solid and you have to try like hell to break it.
I couldn't tell you about the price. If that gear is what you want, then I'd imagine it's a good price... or at least an OK one. I know the locker is nice to have, and hard to find. I can sell the 4.10 3rd members for 125 all day long.

No worries!! I feel the same way about the price, hell, the re gear for what I have is 150 alone, toss in the cheapest of traction aids and I'll have three times the cost and half the strength at best.

I think I have this axle in a 71 3/4 Ton 4X4 Custom Camper. I am not sure if there is an H-052 Eaton as that was what the guy at NAPA kept insisting it was, but then none of his parts fit either.

Here's a pic for comparison's sake.

My advice either way is don't re-do the brakes stock. It cost me over $600 just to find and install new bearings, seals, shoes and drums. And yes it was a complete nightmare.

I hear now that you can get a rear disc brake conversion for less money, and you'd have a much better set-up, in my opinion.

Otherwise it's been good.

From what I understand the H-052 is 3/4 ton and H-072 is one ton, the only difference being in the brakes and the addition of a thrust button for ring gear anti-deflection. The more I search I find them to be more and more expensive! I'm starting to re consider. Thanks for the info!!!

another difference, the 52 could be had in a coil spring set up, the 72 never came like that.
