Never seen this before, need advice - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi all, while running the blazer yesterday, I noticed that I had oil leaking from the drivers side valve cover. Its in the middle of the vertical inboard side of the valve cover. Put my finger on it and its the rocker touching the valve cover and pushing oil thru it! Is the valve cover on backwards? Its the strangest thing I've ever seen. Its doing it in about 3 places all along the length of the cover. This is the cover that has the oil fill cap and PCV valve in it. Oil filler is in the front. Any advice welcome. Thanks, Jeff.

Hmmm...trying to figure this one out. Are you saying the rockers are knocking against the valve cover? Is oil leaking out anywhere other than at the gasket? If it's got roller rockers, you'll probably need to get taller valve covers. I imagine it's possible to mount them on backwards, but I'm not sure so there could be a clearance issue with the baffle in the valve covers.

Yes, the rockers are hitting the inner side of the valve cover and oil is coming out. The gasket itself is not leaking. Its coming thru the metal!! The rockers are mounted correctly, they are just stock rockers. I'm thinking that I have the valve cover on backwards and its too close.

I know on my OEM 327 valve covers, they are right/left side specific to a certain degree. Since there is a bit of an offset to how each one sits on the head.
I've never seen it where the rocker arms tap them from the inside, but I am sure there are a few factors that could make that happen.

To me, I can spot the valve cover shape easy. So when I see them on a motor the wrong way, it sort of reminds me of someone wearing their shoes wrong

From your pic it looks like the pas side should be on the driver side with the PCV hole towards the radiator, and driver side should be moved over to the pas side with the oil cap towards the radiator.

That's my guess just from looking at the covers in your photo.

I believe that those are on backwards too. You'll see that there's a definite high side and a low side on those. The high side should be closest to your carb. Yours are the other way. Hope it hasn't cracked from the rockers knocking on it, but from your description, it might be too late.

Yes they are side specific some are worse than others as far as fit. I had a set at one point that were cracked from the rockers rubbing them after a gasket swap.

Yep, I'll run them til I can't stand the leak anymore. Luckily they are cheap and easy to get. I too learned something. Would not have thought that they went on a certain way.

Back in the good old days, the covers said "Chevrolet" on them and it was automatic that you would put them on so they read right side up. See what happens when GM tries to save a few cents by leaving the script off of the covers?
