71-72 Mirro backing plate

Hey guys do you know who sells these mirror backing plates ? I know classic industries sells them for the 67-68 but not the 71-72.

THis is the plate that goes inside the door panel so that you can screw on the side mirrors Thanks.

Re: 71-72 Mirro backing plate

I've been looking for these, OEM or repops for a while. Best I can figure no one repops these at the moment. I'm almost ready to buy a set of repop sport mirrors just for the brackets.

I bought a set of repop sport mirrors. Don't care for the bracket and screws that come with them. The brackets have the 3 holes pre drilled, but the screws are just sheet metal screws and I don't think they're even stainless.

Original backing plates have a welded nut and accept 1/4-20" threads. The original screws have a small head that recesses into the mirror body. Even though it's a 1/4-20" you can't just get them at the hardware store. Heads are too big.

I only changed one side so far. I got very lucky and re-used the original backing plate. Trick was to not let the backing bracket fall inside the door. Otherwise, you'll need a second set of hands inside the door panel.

Re: 71-72 Mirro backing plate

I would try truck and car shop. The reason I say that is, I called them a few years back and they sold me the clips to attach the fender eyebrows to my 71 GMC even though they werent listed separately in their catalog. Maybe they will do the same with the backing plates. You never know til you ask!

Actually, here they are for $11 each. I wonder why they look different than the ones they sell with the mirrors??? However, only the person putting them on would ever know!

Re: 71-72 Mirro backing plate

Those are not sport mirror backing plates. I have called them recently, as well as Brothers, Classic Industries, LMC and others. Nada. Thanks for the effort!
