1970 C10 Problems

I have a 1970 C10. Everything is stock except that I had dual exhaust put on it about a year ago. I am working on restoring it and have changed all of the hoses, belts, and some gaskets but lately it hasn't been running very well. My truck usually idles well but then when I go and drive somewhere it feels like it is studdering, if that makes sense. I tried some carb cleaner on it the other day and that didn't do anything. I am also about to change the spark plugs, wires, and points. I hope that it may be one of those things. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Welcome from South Seattle (Kent). Where are you located? A tune-up is a great place to start. The next option would be replacing all the vacuum hoses and you might be a carb tune-up and rebuild. I would then do a compression test to see what condition the engine is in. There are several inxpensive books (Haynes Techbook 10305 - Chevrolet Engine Overhaul Manual) that are easy to read and will nearly make you an expert on these old V-8's if you digest everything in them.

What gaskets did you replace? Anything related to the card or intake?

welcome to the board.
your studder ismost likely a misfore, and your tune up should probably fix it.
Instead of putting new points in it, you should consider an HEI upgrade. You can do it cheap, and it'll make the driveablilty , off idle power, starting, MPG.... it'll help all of that... plus, you won't have to mess with the points...ever.

Re: 1970 C10 Problems

Thanks for all the responses guys. How easy it to replace the distributor with an HEI? I was actaully wondering about this myself since I have no idea how to change the points and neither does my dad.

Re: 1970 C10 Problems

Will I really notice much of a difference with an HEI? I have been talking to some people and they have said it is not too hard to change the points so I have been thinking about just doing that.

Re: 1970 C10 Problems

The first thing I did for mine was HEI. I got an ok one off Craigs List for $20. You will need to get new wires, but that is part of the tune up anyway. It takes about 20 minutes and a power wire. I ran a new wire off the fuse box, switched 12 volts, and you're good to go.

Set the motor to TDC and that's it.

Re: 1970 C10 Problems

Why chainge points every 6 to 8 months, they are getting less and less common at the parts house, MPG and throttle responce increases, and starts up a lot quicker... all good reasons to use HEI.
