Full time 4wd conversion kits?

Hey gang, thank you for taking some time to read and help me out with this. I may be purchasing a 1976 scottsdale 4wd short bed. The truck is solid and I will be making a trip to Minnesota from Arizona sometime this summer, probably June. Does anybody have any experience with the Mile Marker or Warn kits that make the front hubs lockouts? I know that converting the transfer case would be a better alternative, but my budget may not permit that at this point. The lockouts seem like a cheap enough alternative that I was considering it. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Hey redrider, You can't simply put lockouts on and have part-time 4x4. If you did than your truck wouldn't move becouse all the power will be transfered to the wheels with least resistance which would be the front becouse of the unlocked hubs. It works just like an open diff. in your t-case but when you shift into 4-lock then power is transfered evenly to both front and back. Also I have bought the warn premium lockouts and they work great.

Doesn't the hub kit disengage the front wheels though? I guess maybe I don't understand how it works. Here's the kit I as looking at, and thank you for being patient with an obvious noob.

Those hubs would work great on your truck but you must also get a 203 part-time kit for your T-case. I think their was another thread that talked about full time to part time conversions.

Factory full-time 4wd vehicles have a differential built into the transfer case. Factory part-time vehicles do not.

A conversion should come with the part that you change in the transfer case as well as the hubs.

Seems to me the more I read up on this, the more it sounds like I should just leave it full time 4wd. What do you guys think?

The kit he posted the link to comes with the hubs AND the t-case conversion...

Thanks for the input guys. A little better understanding now I know what I have to do. I will get some pics up of the truck if i do end up buying her.

The case conversion is not really all that hard. I did mine when I did my transmission, and it only took 30 minutes or so (but that was with the T-case on the floor). I don't think it would be very had to do in the truck, either.
