What tools are in your truck at all times?

1 month and 1 week with my "new" 72. I can tell it's going to be a little temperamental. I put a couple of canvas zipper bags in my truck with an assortment of combo wrenches, 3/8 sockets, ball peen hammer, adjustable and needle-nose pliers, and a few screw drivers. Stock jack and handle and after market lug wrench. I was just wondering what ya'll keep for road side breakdowns, slow downs, hoe downs, etc.

There's no name stamped in you somewhere... Does that mean you're one of them cheesy Chinese Harbor Freight tools?

Don't take it to heart!

I recently got a 6T bottle jack to replace the old 3T jack. The 4-way is always behind the seat. That's it, unless you count a 30' cable and a couple log chains.

Re: What tools are in your truck at all times?

I've been meaning to put together a tool kit for each of my vehicles for a while now, still haven't gotten around to it.

cheap test light
spark tester
tire plugs
bicycle tire pump
spare ignition module / points for distributor
fire extinguisher
flash light

If I keep going I should just get a tow bar and attach it to the front of the local Snap-on truck

Re: What tools are in your truck at all times?

I have a lug wrench, but I don't have a spare or a jack.

So far, I haven't driven my new '68 further than I'm willing to walk home from.

I suppose I'll get a tool kit together for her first workout-I have a couple tons (I hope) of scrap iron I'm gonna haul down to the big city next week. I have my truck-bed trailer loaded already, and I'll load up 'ol green closer to show time.

Re: What tools are in your truck at all times?

I usually carry a blow molded tool kit if I'm going out of town.Other than that,a pair of channel locks,a 9/16ths and small cresent are in the glovebox.I have only needed any of it once since I tend to use my vehicles to only about 40-50% of their reliability. The one time I needed something,it was a terminal end and by luck I had one in my pocket from a work related repair earlier in the day.The channel locks loosened the nut and crimped the power wire to the coil.

Re: What tools are in your truck at all times?

I have a little blow molded tool kit that has a bunch of sockets in it, 4 sizes of wrenches, a screwdriver with a bunch of tips, then I throw in a pair of pliers, and a set of jumper cables.

The test light is a darn good idea.

Re: What tools are in your truck at all times?

In my '68, witch only really goes to shows, is a LED light flashlight, adjustable pliers, needle nose pliers, and fuses.

In my dd '95 Chevy I have in my tool box, full assortment of wrenches and sockets, full construction tool pouch (hammer, screwdriver, ex.), 3/8" log chain, 1/2" log chain (just in case ), 50,000lb tow strap, 4 treated wood 4x4's, bungee cords, ratchet straps, extra oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, trans fluid, rags, funnel, and some other things that I don't use on a daily basis.

If something happens to the '68 then the '95 is not very far away to come and save it .

>>I have a lug wrench, but I don't have a spare or a jack.<<

Same here, but if I'm lucky I'll try to remember the cell if I'm going out of the area.

Discovered the water pump was bad a couple of weeks ago. I was about ten miles out and the temp started going up when it was almost out of water. Put water in and drove home. It never did OVER-heat.

About twenty years ago I snapped the crank in half between the 4 & 5 journal. Drove the fifteen miles home. Threw a new crank into the bottom and drove another ten years.

With a straight six you don't need no stinking tools to get home. HA HA

Re: What tools are in your truck at all times?

I always have my tool box under the seat of my truck.I use an old ammo box that i got from a friend.

I have it stuffed with all kinds of tools.Mini wire brush(very handy for old trucks),wire strippers/crimper,needle nose, vise grips,e-tape,5/16 nut driver(beats stabbing your hand with a flat screw driver on hose clamps),ratchets, sockets(deep and short),Extensions, lots of wrenches including line wrenches.A BFH too.The lid to the box has a rubber seal to keep moisture away from the bullets.I threw the box with my tools in it in the lake and left it there for a week. When I took it out and opened the box,my tools were bone dry

Re: What tools are in your truck at all times?

In one of my classics I keep a small tool kit in a storage cubby. It's got a screwdriver, small wrench set and ratchet / socket set with a short extension. It also has a small extinguisher, headlamp, first aid kit, fuses, 1 quart of oil, full size spare, jack, tire stop, lug wrench and small prybar / jack handle. I keep a spare ignition module on hand in that one because I've had one fail before with no notice.

In my DD Jeep I keep water, energy bars, full size spare, jack, lug wrench, blankets, fuses, folding shovel, 1 quart of oil, spare serpentine belt, medium size extinguisher, flashlight, first aid kit, jumper cables, tow strap and tie downs. I throw a small blow-molded tool kit in it for long trips.

My Suburban will eventually have most of the above as well as two or more halon extinguishers, a hi-lift jack, the full tool set that's already sitting in the garage, ready to go (hammers, screwdrivers, sockets, prybars, chisels, wrenches, pliers, etc.....), Bubba Rope and a few spare parts (like axle shafts). I'll probably keep some spare coolant and other fluids on hand too. It'll spend a fair amount of time off of paved roads where AAA can't go and cell phone coverage might be sparse.
