I found this 66 on craigslist for a stupid cheap price and could not pass it up. Its all factory, no frame swaping. It has the original 327, transfer case and 4 speed tranny w/ power brakes. All of the interriror is there. I was never really a fan of 4x4s but always thought it would be fun to go off of the beaten path. As far as plans Im thinking I want to go 700r4 w/ front disk brakes and power steering. Im assuming everything swaps from the later models just like the half tons but I will do my homework. We also brought the 64 home.

Maybe someone can help me with my addiction to Burbs. Over the years I have collected 2-1960's, 2 -1964's, 2 1966's, 2 1950's and 1-1957 all Suburbans. Usualy I need two of each to make one good one for I get them really cheap and in poor condition. I hope to do something with them in my lifetime.

The later model square body axles will bolt right in and I'm pretty sure the later power steering box will too. You might have to get a bracket or drill a couple extra holes in the frame. On my 63 Chevy we took the short leafs out of the front (very bottom ones). You want these springs to flex and the bottom is a stiffener that is hard on the frame. I took the springs and had them re-arched an extra 2 inches, when they settled down they were 1 to 1.5 over stock and still flexy. Springs are easier and cheaper to replace than these old frames. The nice thing about these old springs is the lubeable bushings, last forever if kept greased.


If you go to the 700R4 you can get a leaf sprung Blazer trans and t-case, front and rear axles, steering column and all the pieces and just swap them over. It would make it real simple if you want to keep it 1/2 ton.

These early Suburban/Carryalls usually had 3.73 gears in them. Blazers are all over the map, some as tall as 3.08's. I would try and find more 3.73's especially if you keep those tires and wheels. The .70 overdrive will turn those 3.73's into 2.60's on the highway. 3.08's become 2.16's, which are way too tall for this vehicle.

Way to go, looks like a solid burb. I prefer 4x4's and they are more rare. Don't know about the 327 being original though. All the literature I've seen says the 283 was the biggest you could get in a 4x4 (not counting the big V6 GMC'S), but I guess anything could be special ordered back then. My '66 came with a 283 according to the previous owner who bought it all original in 1971. He did some nice upgrades including AC and a 10 bolt with PS and discs. I like the idea of a 700r4 as well, but the 420 sure is fun and capable off road. Enjoy!

When you say only 418 do you mean of all suburbans manufactured? 66 4x4s?

I always thought 327s were availible on 66s. Oh well, is there anyway to verify? Its not gonna be doing any rock crawling, nothing hardcore. I want to take this baby to the coast or sequoias and still be able to get it on the highway. I feel the 700 would be best.

Not to argue but 4x4's are not "C" series, everything I've read, says the biggest v8 offered in a K series 1/2 ton was a 283. I remember seeing a '61 or '62 4x4 with a 348 the owner claimed was a factory original special order deal. You should be able to easily check the engine number on the block and see if it matches.

A dana 60 front or rear? There were Dana 60 6 lug semi-float rears out there, but not many. Dana 60 fronts for a Chevy have a number 60 on the lower web like your 44 does (its behind your steering stabalizer). It has king pins and has one u-bolt on the passenger side. The inside of the spring plate has bolts that go through it into the axle. A 6 lug semi-float 14 bolt would make a great rear axle for this Suburban. They are strong, easy to find and have bigger rear brakes than a half ton. Most come with 3.73 or 4.10's.

dig your burb! luv the 4wd trucks. a few years ago at the pate swap meet three older gents had a 66 2wd burb less engine / trans on a trl for sale. it was rust free, but the kicker was it was a p/s, a/c & auto truck from the factory! they wanted $2500 for it. i bought a barber chair instead.

Thanks for the info. I will know what to look for in the front dana 60 but how do I spot the 14 bolt rear you speak of? Half price day at the wreckers is coming and will be doing some searching.

I hear these things are hard to find but hell I got 2 and know of at least 3 more in town. Cant say Ive seen any others with a/c though. This is my first 4x4 and am looking forward to using it. Although its not really needed since everything has been flattened and paved here.
