fuel gauge woes
This is actually for my 73 truck but I'm hoping you guys might be able to help. I have ready different posts about the sending unit and how it should have different ohms for empty vs full. What I'm trying to figure out though is if there is a chance it's the gague and not the tanks? Reason why is that it's duel tanks and each one does something different. The left tank will say 1/4 full whether it's full or empty. When I switch to the right tank, it goes off the marks and over to the 3 O'clock position. Any thoughts? Thanks!

It could also be in the selector switch. If you can find the sender wire coming from the gauge and ground it, that should peg the gauge to full. That should give you somewhat of an idea if the gauge is working correctly.

If you can borrow a known good fuel gauge and replace it that is the best check of the fuel gauge - about a 20 minute task and saves a lot of guesswork.

Stock 73 should have a DPDT on-on switch with 5 wires. Half of the switch controls which sender is routed to the gauge through one side of the switch. The other half of the switch sends power to the solenoid valve when the auxiliary tank is selected.
A DPDT on-on toggle with a six contact arrangement could be installed as a direct replacement for the rocker switch by clipping the unnecessary lug. Assuming the PO didnt butcher it too badly in an attempted repair or attempted update to the later motorized valve... Unplug the switch. Ground the center terminal on the side of the plug with three wires. This should peg the fuel gauge when the ignition is on... if the wire is intact from the gauge to the switch. |
