I gutted out a 66 Olds 98. I took alot of good parts off it. It even had a big block 425 Super Rocket in it.

I took the column out not knowing it had telescopic on it. I was taking the shifter collar off it, when I went to take the steering wheel off, I couldnt get the horn ring off. I grabbed the center and twisted it and out it came....telescopic! So I got everything on...the seal up around the dash....the floor board seal and collar. I am putting it in the steeper tomorrow to test fit it. I will post pics as I am doing the job. If this works out like I think it will....I think we will have a few more options for tilt wheels out of big GM cars before 69.

As promised pics. I had to modify two brackets. The wiring wasnt a problem. I collapsed the out column. The rod that goe from the column to the steering box. I had to cut the auto shifter collar off so I could set the column in.
Heres some pics.

Its not done. I got alittle too cold out there. I had to tuck the wiring under the dash...mount the turn signal switch. Put the truck back together. But this is and idea of what it takes to put a big GM car column in a 67 to 72 Chevy truck. I also am going to take a piece of aluminum to cover the section right before the dash.

That wheel is perfect. I could see me doing that to that old wheel. It just looks cool along with the nostalgic touch of yesteryear.

Thats why I measured this one. Yeah I had to money the buy a new column...tilt only. So this was a quick not so expensive experiment that came out good.

You will find it is worth it. The cable that goes down to the turn signal switch...if you have a manual trans....unmount it. I am looking for a spot to mount it under the dash. I need to find a Chevy emblem for the center button. I really am pleased with my idea. I wasnt sure it would work...but it works. Use the plug off an old truck column and the wires are color coded.

Ah, affordable alternatives. Harder to find these days but it looks good in there.
Also if that wheel doesn't do it for you many other GM wheels will bolt up to that column as most have the same shaft diameter and spline count.

It could have been worth a mint...But I wanted to do this. Its not the worth or money I could have gotten. I believe this being able to be done is worth more then the money.

Besides...the steering wheel is really cool!

but if you take off and replace the steering wheel wouldnt it delete the telescopic part like on the caddy steering cloumns? a buddy took his off and the telescopic part was part of the steering wheel.

Yeah there is no way of getting rid of the wheel for another. I really like the fact of telescopic. Makes this 69 one of a kind.

The center...you twist it loose and it works the telescopic. We may see and uprise in old caddys losing the columns now!

yah i wouldnt be suprised about the caddy column thing to, cuz it would probably work. oh yah and it was a 73 caddy, but my other buddy has a 70 caddy that has a telescopic tilt to. not sure what year they started though, probably in the learly 60's

I had a 64 Coupe De Ville that had the tilt/tele option.

That looks great. Here are some pictures of mine, work in progress. Top piece mounts behind steering wheel. I cut the center off the steering wheel & used it to mount a aftermarket wheel. Same bolt pattern just different size bolts. Funny thing I cant remember what year the column is

Its a 69 and up...but it almost looks like its going to set the wheel into your chest. Even though I collapsed the shaft to get it where I wanted it....If I extend the telescopic its in my chest. I cut the auto shifter collar off so I could put the column in towards the dash. Not knocking it...I just thinks it going to lay it into your chest.

You would be correct, except I'm 5'11 140lb. Planning on putting in a seat out of a 2005 pickup in it. I'll take pictures when I'm done. I have another 69 with factory seat/wheel no tilt, not enough room for my legs, main reason i never drive it.

I think most guys paint the columns with regular automotive paint in the proper color to match the interior of the rig.

I'm not sure on the wheel it's self but I think a few searches on steering wheel restoration will bring up answers.
There are horn kits available to put custom wheels on some tit tel columns but they seem hard to find and usually are for Corvettes. I have one out of a 76 Seville that isn't huge and should work in a truck like this. Now you have me started on another project as if I need another one.

I love the wheel. Dont want to change it at all. I want the column and wheel black. The button for sure needs the Chevy emblem in the middle.

good job Kid,, I would like one of those myself .on my truck .I had one but sold it ..it was hooked to my Vette .LOL sure amazed people when they seen me screw the horn button and pull the wheel towards me just before driving off.

Now I can say I know a guy who put a teleoscopic steering wheel in one of our old trucks..
