Axle Width on 1970 4x4 stepside

Hello my name is Matt and I am 14 so i am a newb to these trucks that are 3 times older than me. I just got a brand spankin new 1970 4x4 stepside. My dad and i purchased this truck to fix up for me when I turn 16. Since i only have 2 years to geter done, I need some info on why my front axle is 5 inches wider than my rear axle. I have a Dana 44 in the front that is 62" wide plate to plate, my rear is a GM ad it is 57" wide. Can someone please tell me what the width of the front and rear are suppost to be for that year. It has drum brakes all the way around. Thanks for any help, Matt
