confused about a drum/disc swap
ok heres what I have and was woundering what the results are going to be...
I am looking at a 71 truck with disc I want to keep my cupped LCA from my 70 ( I know I need to swap the ball joint ) what else do I need from the 71 will it wided my wheel base how much?? (worried about fender lip clearance with my 8" rallies when I drop it) Is there a stock 6 lug disc that will go on the 71 spindle?? or do I need to find new wheels and swap the rear axles?? I plan to pro street the truck in the near future so I don't want to start playing the tire/rim 5 or 6 lug game I have plenty of 6 lug 16 hole rallies and was planning to cut and widen one set for the rear....is the 71 axle narrower if i have to do the 5 lug thing?? |

Re: confused about a drum/disc swap
uh,... could be.
There is a lot if discussion regarding the 1970 (only) rear axle housing. It is suppose to be the "transition year". I would say that 90% of the '70 housings are the narrower 63-70 version. But some members have found a '70 6-lug housing the same width as the wider ''71-'72 housings. Your disc brake swap will add approximately 1.5" total, (.75 per side) to your front track width. The wider 71-72 rearends are also 1.5" wider than the narrower 6-lug rear ends.

Re: confused about a drum/disc swap
You will also need the '71 upper a-arms or '71-'72 upper balljoints swapped into your '70 upper a-arms

Re: confused about a drum/disc swap
Hottrucks... you should be fine running a set of 8" wide ralleys upfront as I did until I had time to repaint/mount the 7" ralleys. I was running 235 75R15's on all four corners with a 4.5/6" drop without rubbing once.

Re: confused about a drum/disc swap
Are you adding drop spindles at this time?

Re: confused about a drum/disc swap
no I have no room for drop spindles ...with the cupped lowers my inner fenders only clear by 1/4"
I was running 235/75/15's till I blew the cords out of one the other day (did you know there is no pin at the 0 on the speedo)..since then I have moved my rear tires forward (255/70/15) I'm not sure they are going to clear the lip with the added width of the disc convertion??....This has me in a funky position right now...I don't want to buy 235's for the front since the 255's are new?? then if I end up changing to 5 lug wheels that will bring another wheel factor into it.....the big problem is I love my 16 hole rallies they fit the look of the truck and I'm working on a pair of 14" wide ones now that are 6 lug Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!
