Post Help! truck failed VA state inspection..

Because their book says passenger vehicles after 1968 that the "brake" light on the dash is suppose to light when the e-brake is on. I know it's not suppose to on my 1970. How do I get around this? The funny thing is I had no problems the past two times I got it inspected. Any body know where in the VA code our trucks are exempt from this? Any help would be great. I will be calling the state police tomorrow and find out what I can. Thanks,

Passenger vehicles or passenger cars?

I'd look the law itself up as closely as possible and see if there's a loophole, or a federal law that supersedes it.

That sounds like a bunch of crap to me. I certainly don't have an e-brake light on my inst. panel. Neither does my parts truck. Unless I'm completely ignorant-WTF? I think someone (the inspector) has their head up their butt.

Sorry guys, it is supposed to work. It had worked on my '70 3/4 ton. Need to figure out whats wrong with the one ton's light now.
It is the left light on the fuel guage. It lights when there is a hydraulic failure, or if the parking brake is on.

The switch for the e-brake is actually on the pedal...or handle in your case. The brown wire on the master cylinder is for lighting it durring hydralic problems.

Got this for Virginia inspection laws, maybe somebody can make sense of this.

Brake System Failure Indicator Lamp

2. Passenger vehicles manufactured after January 1, 1968, are not equipped with a brake failure warning lamp or warning lamp does not light with parking brake applied when ignition key is turned to the start position, except for anti-lock system. With engine running and parking brake released, the lamp should go off, except for vehicles equipped with anti-lock system. Apply service brake for 10 seconds. If the brake warning lamp lights again, the warning light does not come on when there is a leak, or the light is not functioning properly, the system is defective. NOTE: This paragraph does not apply to vehicles registered as street rods.

How would it light up with the parking brake on? There is no switch on the parking brake on any truck I have ever seen, just on the master cylinder.

Hmmmm, the GMC nor the Longhorn has a switch...I swear I remember the old longhorn's dash light being on when I hit the parking brake...I guess I could be mistaken. My fault.

Can't say I have ever seen a switch on the parking brake. From what I can remember, the dash brake light should come on while cranking the engine over and then go out. It has nothing to do with the parking brake.

My first idea for you is to make sure a 'truck' is considered a passenger vehicle. The laws were different concerning safety features between cars and trucks, still are today in fact.

My trucks brake light is stuck one. Somthing with the proportioning valve but can't find a proportioning valve like mine. Everyone I look at is different. I believe it was Manes last summer who told me that they used different ones every so often.

I can't beleive your being hassled for something so idiotic! What's next, ashtray too full to pass?

I don't know how it is in your state but if that happened to me, I would leave that garage and never go back! (and let them know all about it on the way)

Im fortunate, the place I go trusts me and doesn't act like they are running the third reich! I guess it helps being friends with the owner.

As far as I know, there was no emergency brake light anyhow. The brake light that is on the dash is for when the fluid runs low. Niether of my trucks has a switch on the E-brake.

I have had a 71 & a 72 and both of them had a switch on the e-brake pedal to make that light come on and they worked. Just get a pin switch like what turns the dome light on and mount it on the e-brake to make it work. It works just like the dome light it comes on when the wire is grounded. I wouldn't think it would take more than 20 minutes to make it work.

I have seen hundreds of these trucks up here in Canada and never seen one with any kind of switch for the e-brake to activate the dash light 67 through 72

OK I called the state police and they said if I show them where and how it's suppose to work they can pass it. I took the truck to 2 places, same answer. The chassis manual states the light comes on during cranking and if the switch senses a difference in pressure between the front and rear brakes, i.e. open a rear wheel cylinder and push the brakes the light should come on. All I have to do is take the service manual to the station and they will pass it. Thanks,

Some laws plain suck.but the brake light switch lens indicator or whatever they call it on my trucks however is on the bottom left of the fuel gauge, never noticed if they work, never use my ebrake much.
I love some of our laws in AZ ive been pulled over twice because of no license plate light,so tempted to put a generator in the bed,and hook a 1000 halide to my bumper to light it up,ive also been pulled over for trailer hitch ball interfearing with reading the license plate, headlamp out, etc.had them even check the vin numbers down here-kinda sucks when your already running late for work at 6:00 in the morning.I just say ok,ok ill fix it-tell em what they want to hear and usually on your way,i use to be a smartass but that seems to tie up more time and get a ticket.

It sounds to me like the state has that law in place for a reason. If the light doesn't light with the emergency brake on does it work with a loss of pressure?

When I'm driving a smaller car I sure don't want some huckleberry wiping me out in his 5000 pound truck that doesn't pass inspection because the brake light in the dash is broke.

Think of the other guy...

Just checked for the brake light on my 68. When I start it up the light comes on for about 1/2 a second then goes out. The light is at bottom of fuel gauge on mine. This is with e-brake on or off.

That's why it comes on when you crank it, so you know it works.

Thats the most idiotic Liberal crap I've heard yet. What the hell do fight foriegn countries for FREEDOM?? I don't think so I think we are on a downhill slide here folks.
What a bunch of crap sorry sir some idiot light on your dash doesn't light up your truck fails pay the cashier next victim oh mean customer. State inspections are a joke
true offenders won't replace wore out brake shoes or bald tires and you think these people have insureance LOL there is a black market on state inspections a mile wide. the only people screwed over are the average joe six pack. And sick as it sounds they are getting screwed because an idiot light in the dash doesn't work PATHETIC. For the person concerned about getting ran over by a truck would it comfort you if the truck that hit you had an idiot light on the dash flickering reminding the owner that oh by the way your brakes really are out.

We have State Inspections here in NC too. I call it the nuisance tax. The last time I got my 68 scrutinized, I had just put in a new windshield. I ordered the factory green tint. He asked me if that tint was factory. I said I didn't buy the truck new, I don't know, but it was a factory option. He told me any tint other than factory doubles the cost of the sticker. I know these new Fords that the sheriffs drive didn't come factory with limo tint....?

HAHAHA!! "ashtray too full to pass" good one Bobs409!

My brake light only comes on when I start the ol' pig, not when the e-brake is on. Hmmm, maybe all of our trucks are messed up! (with a hint of sarcasm) OR maybe that's how it was designed!

Sucks man, but I hope it works out in the end for you.
