th400 filter differences - brass or cloth-like?
I went to my local auto parts to pick up parts to change my th400 filter and a couple of seals. They offered 2 filters and when we looked they were pretty different. The body was the same, but the interiors were almost 'opposites'. One had a cloth-like filter media that was visible from end to end. The other had only a brass screen at the intake and seemed empty inside. I have not removed mine to see which I have installed. Can anyone explain these differences and which is better?

Re: th400 filter differences - brass or cloth-like?
It's been 27 years, but I used to work in a trans shop and we used to get TH400s in occasionally with clogged filters. If I remember, the vehicles would act like they were low on fluid and had major problems.
Since we happened to be one of the few ethical shops in L.A.(and an AAMCO at that) we would do a service and send them on their way. I would imagine that a screen type filter would actually be better on a vehicle that misses it's scheduled maintenance.

Mine has the metal screen type. I added a remote oil filter in the front of the truck next to the tranny oil cooler. Now I feel like the oil will be clean. It uses an engine oil type filter.

Re: th400 filter differences - brass or cloth-like?
When I bought my 68,50th,the p.o.(de-ceased)left a lot of parts in it.
There were 3 trans.filter kits. The other day I needed one for my 87 motorhome,so I used one of the extra's. The kit was from Sears, and had a price sticker on it.It sold for $1.77.It has the screen in it. I guess turbo-400's haven't changed much! Mike. |
