Rear axle seals
I rebuilt the rearend for my 70 1/2 ton awhile back and was cleaning a few things up the other day when I noticed that both rear axle seals were/had been dripping-oil spots right below them on the concrete. The pinion seal also has this too. Is there something special that needs to be done to prevent these from leaking?-it's not bad but I want to fix it before I go any further.
any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Rear axle seals
With all three seals leaking, my thought would be to make absolutely sure that the vent tube is not plugged before changing the seals. If the vent tube is plugged, pressure will build up in the axle housing forcing the oil out.
I am assuming that new seals were installed during the rebuild, if not new seals would be in order if the sealing surfaces are good. Jim

Re: Rear axle seals
If there is a groove worn into the shaft/pinion where the seal rides, a new seal will leak. My guess would be that this is your problem on all three.

Re: Rear axle seals
I found out my axle seals were shot when I suddenly lost 50% of my stopping power because the gear oil got into the brakes.

Re: Rear axle seals
There is a axle shaft repair seal that is beefer than the original seal and moves the seal to a different point on the axle shaft so it is not riding in the groove. They are pricey but cheaper than a new axle. I think around $28 each

Re: Rear axle seals
What they do is combine the outer bearing with the seal. They have an o-ring on the perimeter and are a much better sealed outer roller bearing with a n intergal seal.

Re: Rear axle seals
BCA part # s are RP5707, for certain rear ends, just tell the parts guy you need repair bearings for your axles, better luck if you go to a NAPA or other independent parts place, the guys there usually know what you are talking about! Bob
