Engine Number Decoding-HELP!!!
I am considering replacing my engine with one of 4 motors that a "friend in the business" is willing to sell at a good price. I have checked the MorTech website and found some information, but would like more details on the complete engine, if it is available. Here are the block casting numbers and all info that I have found. Any additional info would be greatly appreciated!
SB #1 pass side casting #10243890 driver side casting 5.7LG SGI barcode on oilpan- XJA *10XJA V608072217* no listing on MorTec SB #2 (LT-1) pass side casting #10125327 driver side casting 5.7LG SGI barcode on oilpan- WHA *10WHA V304221605* from MorTec-350-92 & up-2 or 4 bolt main-GEN II-LT-1 BB #1 (TBI) pass side casting #101141182 driver side casting K083 barcode on oilpan- FDJ *10FDJ T310140297* from MorTec-454-91 & up-4 bolt main-GEN V BB #2 (VORTEC) pass side casting #10237297 driver side casting B047 barcode on oilpan- PDX *10PDX T202070105* from MorTec-454-96 & up-4 bolt main-VORTEC 7400-"L-29" These are all complete motors without computers. I am looking for HP/torque ratings, info on heads/cams/cranks/etc and what vehicles they may have been used in (to know what computers to look for). Any help will be greatly appreciated! I may be offline for several hours, but will check back frequently. Kent

check the passenger side head. there should be some more suffixes there. then do a search for engine suffix codes on your favorite search engine. the one you want to use will be 3 digit letter code. will give you most of the info such as year and tranny type and vehicle type.

Could you possibly post a pic or describe the first one a bit more?
The second one is an LT1, a nice hot-rod fuel-injected engine made from 1992 to 1997. Its ratings varied from 275 to 305, depending on the car and external trim. You'll need to find out what year it is before you can get a computer for it, though. 1992-1993 use one computer, 1994-1995 use another, and 1996-1997 use a third. Does it have the full wiring harness? Does it have connectors for O2 sensors both before and after the cats? If so, that should be a '96-'97 engine... The first big block should be about 230hp, my guess (seeing as that's what a pre-Vortec big-block Suburban was rated). Again, you'll probably want to find out the exact year but this should have a decent range to work with. The second should be 290hp; go for a 1996 or 1997 ECU for any big-block truck, that should do the job.

Thanks for the info. Where on the passenger side head do I look for the "three digit code"?
All of these engines are on wooden shipping pallets with several layers of shrink wrap and quite a bit of dust. I tried not to disturb the packing too much as the remaining engines will be shipped and sold to others. All are complete with valve covers, distributor & wires, water pump, intake & exhaust manifolds, fuel delivery system, sensors, etc. The only noticeable things missing are starters, wiring harness, and the LT-1 is missing the harmonic balancer. It also has cast iron heads, if that helps identify it more. The only other information I can provide on SB #1 is that the intake is aluminum. It had several sheets of cardboard covering the intake, all held in place by shrink wrap and Band-It straps. I could only see the ends that were aluminum. If I know where to look for the additional numbers, I can make another trip to the warehouse to see what I can find. Thanks for all the help!!! Kent

The LT1 has cast-iron heads? That means its an Impala SS engine, which drops the power by about 10-15hp, but the computer is the same (the computers, at least the '94-'95 models, had a setting for vehicle...Y, F, or B body, reprogrammable).
At least being iron-headed scratches the '92-'93 computers from the list, but it could still be a '94, '95, or '96.

they all sound like new FI crate engines. i'd say take one of the big blocks, but anyone of the 4 would be a great choice. have fun with your new found power.

OK, here's a little more info and another question. I e-mailed this thread to MorTec. Ed responded by saying I may have read the number incorrectly on SB #1 and it is probably 10243880, which makes it a 350, 95-00, 2 or 4 bolt, Vortec GEN I, roller cam, 1 piece rear seal.
BB#1 has about 30K miles on it, the rest are "new." I am leaning towards the L-29, just to have a BB, and all the GM literature says this is pretty much a 100K "maintenance free" engine. I know I would have to add the computer and harness. Anything else? Is this the best choice or would one of the SB's make a better engine? I will use it mainly as a driver, occasional "cruise in" show, but nothing more than that. I don't ever intend to "race" but would like "streetable" performance. I currently have a TH350 or a 700R4 to mate with, but if I have to buy a computer that also controls the tranny, I may swap for a 4L60E/80E. Thanks for the help so far and any input is appreciated! Kent

you can run a 88-92 700 without a computer. you may need to get the conversion box to run a mechanical speedo if you go that way. not sure what you need for the electric speedo. may be included or have a box to run with speedo. 4L60E/4L80E need the computers to control them. you will be able to use most aftermarket perfromance parts on your set up. some are vehilce specific but if you can do some fab work and are willing to experiment, then you have little bounds. you will also need to get an in tank fuel pump and run it off a realy, along with a fuel return line to the tank. the relay should be in the harness. good luck with your project.

Just one more comment...try to get the computer from a manual transmission vehicle. I'm pretty sure the automatic vehicles will freak out if they don't see a 4L60E or 4L80E there, and I don't know if the programmers that work with those computers can change that value.
