Differential Cleaning
I'm getting ready to put my 4" lift on my truck. But before I did that I was going to redo the whole front steering. So since I was going to take differential out I wanted to clean it and paint it. What is the best to use. I will use a wire wheel but wanted to put something on it to eat through some of the crud. Many people have suggested oven cleaner. What do you guys recommend?

I just use what my dad has used to clean things for years. Some gas and a wire brush type thing with a long handle. lol not sure of the exact name but that always gets things clean.

oven cleaner is a good thing to loosen up the crud//it also has the advantage of not exploding like gas does

I used some oven cleaner and water outta the hose and then got a wire wheel for my disk grinder and finished it up with that then shot on some paint.. Heres a pic..

When getting all the crud off and ready to paint. Does it require to primer it. Or can I just spray the paint on.

Primer will help it stick better. Paint is really designed to stick to primer and primer is designed to stick metal. However, I have painted tons of things without priming them. It will really depend on how much time and $ you want to put into it. Once you have it clean you might want to wipe it down with wax and grease remover (available @ any automotive paint store). This will help remove any oil and residue and promote adhesion.
