Door Locks

I've read through the old threads and can't find my answer.

Doors lock fine when the doors are open with the key and with inside push down knob.

Doors closed will not lock with key or knob.

New Honda door seals and doors are hung square and centered.

I tried pushing and pulling on the doors while locking but no luck.

Maybe the latch isn’t clicking all the way?

Lock the door before closing by pushing the inside button down and close with the outside handle button pushed in . You have to hold the button in when closing the door from outside . See if that works for you .

That won't work on these trucks Grumpy, the button will just pop back up.

OP: Only way to cure that is to move the striker out. Did you lube all of the moving parts inside the door, and the star wheel? That may help if you haven't. If you roll the window down and use a good strong flashlight you can see the door latch & lock through the opening at the back of the window. Spray that, and spray a little penetrating oil on the mechanism. If you decide to move the striker out be sure and mark around it with a fine felt tip pen and only move it about 1/16" at a time. Make sure it doesn't move up or down.

With the door closed window down take a flash light and look inside the door through the window opening on the back of door. Work the key are the door lock and see what is happening.

Pictures of what to look for, Loc Doc posted these in another thread. If you can't see these parts moving then spray them down good and I would suggest loosening the bolts on the end of the door holding the latch in place and trying it. You may want to take it all out and make sure it's all in good working condition.

I'm going to give those suggestions a try this afternoon.
It's strange that the entire mechanism works great with the door open.
When the door is closed it turns about half the way to the lock possition then stops.
When I put them together after the paint job, I have to admit I did not know what I was doing. I referanced some drawings and photos and am pretty sure I got it all right. I also used silicone lube on it all when I was putting them together. I just need to get a good look at whats going on in there.

I was always told it was so you couldn't lock your keys in the truck. Maybe the designers thought that guys that bought trucks were dumber than the ones that bought cars....... Dunno'.

The design is a tad different is my guess.
I have always herd the same as Doc. Heck maybe we are a little different than most.

Well,, I tried all the above suggestions. Move d the striker out then in, even tried up and down. I finally just put them back in to starting point. Lubed everything well. I took the inside door covers off and didn't see anything strange. I even turned the star wheels to different posistions.
The latches are original, so I guess it's time to give new ones a try.

I put those 60's car latches in my 67. They work great. They lock with the button pushed in. Quite a bit of work to make it look proper and to work without moving the lock cylinder but way nicer than the original parts. I would do this mod again.

Can you give some specific's on what you had to do? Maybe a thread you did this in are start a new thread with a write up.

What I did was first I lined up the door lock cylinder to the hole in the skin where it would operate properly. You will need to use the pawl from the car. I them made a template on where the mounting holes need to be. You will have to enlarge the bottom recessed mounting hole from the original latch so the latch sits flat on the inside of the door. Once you drill the holes I used the mounting screw to suck the metal to a flare so the screws countersunk. The I took a air file and filed the shape of the latch. Once that was done I located the spot on the jamb where the latch pole mounts. Made the hole square so it had some adjustment. The door remote wire and lock will need some tweeking as well but that's easy. Now the crappy part of smoothing and filling out where the old latch and catch were so it looks good. I also had to weld that little piece in my picture on the top so the button on the handle would hit when punched in.

Victory! I got a set of new latches from Summit and the problem is solved. Between the new latches and the Honda door seals I'm loving these doors. They close Soo much better.

I think they just plain wear out and the internals don't operate smooth. New ones after 50 years is probably a good idea to replace them . I too am a fan of the Honda seals. They work great
