engine upgrade time...

well I wasn't planning on upgrading the motor just yet but I guess now is the time... I had a small oil leak so I took it to have it looked at and unfortunately he found some problems, the crank was scored, then found the bearings were shot, camshaft damaged too, also found when the previous owner had the motor worked on they put the main caps in the incorrect order and were loose(which probably caused most of the issues)... so to say the least there is a lot of things that will need to be done to fix the issues. if it was the original 396 block I would just have it rebuilt and fixed but since its not I'm not to worried about it...

so after some debating I'm upgrading the engine to a crate 502... the motor just came in and hoping to start installing it next week. some pics below... more to come. I cant wait till it gets installed...

Re: engine upgrade time...

Can you give more details on your crate 502? There are quite a few out there so I'm curious which one you chose and why.

I'm in a similar situation: have 396/402 want more go. A swap like this would be ideal as it seems all the bolt ons will swap directly over from old to new.

I see a 502 long block on Summit for 6700 w/ 461hp, 558 tq. This the one?

Thanks,

-klb

Re: engine upgrade time...

below is a link to the one I got... its the ZZ502, I actually got it cheaper from the dealership than summit racing!

http://www.chevrolet.com/performance...02-deluxe.html

I did order a set of hedman mid length ceramic coated headers too... I got a electric fan setup coming from oldair products, some other misc items: tubular motor mounts, fuel pump, new stainless transmission lines, etc. I am going to try and go with my front engine accessories off my 396 motor. I may do the serpentine setup later on though...

I will have some more info next week on how its going!

Which dealership did you pick it up from?

Re: engine upgrade time...

Nice! It's going to be really sweet!

FWIW I have the 1000 dollar GM serpentine system with Radial A/C pump, long water pump, PS pump and Alt. It works but it's not very pleasing to the eye and is made of cast iron ( heavy ). Also, future A/C pump replacements are locked into the one type of pump, the ugly radial version, rather than the newer/smaller polished pumps.

Re: engine upgrade time...

An upgrade indeed. I had a ZZ502 in two different cars. A 3860 lb 68 Chevelle w 3.08 rear gears. Wasn't overly impressed with the performance.
Then put it in a 3780 Lb 69 Chevelle w 4.10 rear gears. Hell yeah, them gears woke it up. Ran 11.9 1/4 mile w 1.63 0-60ft times. Pulled wheelies w 10.5W slicks too.

Oh yeah, load it up. Great looking CST. You know, I bet if you looked around some you could find some 502 emblems to replace those 396 ones on the fenders. You probably know of someone who could mill some for you, if you were inclined to change them that is.

Were I you I'd put those 396 valve covers on that 502 and not let a soul know any different.

Re: engine upgrade time...

Here's my ZZ502. I like to dress them stealthily... right down to the tower clamps. In fact, since this photo was taken, I went back to a snorkel air cleaner too!

A quick look at the front timing covers reveals that it's actually a Gen VI engine, but most people don't look that closely.

That really looks nice. Which hedman headers did you get ( part number please if you can ). Any clearance issues?

Thanks,
