Cab support patina
It appears the patina is falling out.
Being from California this rust junk is rather foriegn to me. Truck spent 1st 4 years of it life in Upstate NY and it shows. I'm thinking I'm learning how to weld upside down

Mine truck is a bit atypical. It has the usual rust in one cab corner and the inner rocker panels. Outer rockers are in pretty good shape but I'm sure they will be ugly on the inside when I get there. The cab supports are in super shape but the part that scares me is what I see in the kick panels that probably indicates some real issues in the cowl area.
Is patina really just rust you and live with?

Patina removal , here in Missouri, often times means you end up with much, much less than what you started with...

 you can tell by 1) drop in gas tank 2) deep set rear window 3) short deck lid 4) tail light bucket location 5) the amount of cancer in that RUSTANG !

Back to Chevy talk...sorry, I digressed. I wish I had some pictures of my project truck from before...disassembly happened prior to me owning a digital camera, let alone a camera phone. The truck did not look too bad with all the layers of bondo and paint that it had accrued in it's 23 years of existence before I bought it (neither did the Rustang). Before it was said and done most of the lower 10 inches of the truck had to be replaced. This included the substructure of the floor, lower door skins and bed sides, of course, rockers and cab corns...it was like someone backed it into the ocean when not in use. The front fenders were dang near perfect though...go figure!
Soooo, if that much rust flake can be jostled free in short order...It's got it and got it good. Brigning one back from the grave is not for everyone. It takes alot of patience and time AND you have to be prepared to except the finished product because panel replacement (at my shop) tends to show a little.

The rockers looks ok ish.
The cab supports are a wreck As the the right cab corner is a mess. I bought a small 220v miller welder. Just anxious about this kind of project. I hate fixing rust it never feels like it's right however its probably better with out the rust however.

crap here in upstate new York more than that falls out of my 04 Silverado every time I close my door . so far this year for my 67 I bought inner and outer rockers , kick panels , lower a and b pillars for under both rockers . both inner and outer front fenders for both sides , all four cab support corners , radiator support , grill , hood is on its way now , and ill be ordering both doors soon . after I find the time to install all those ill be replacing the whole bed . by the time I get this finished ill have stupid more than its worth in it . I do love this truck but boy I sure wish I could find a gem like you guys have all over the place out there in the land of the sun .

It's worth it in the end also my thoughtis The hardest part of any job is getting started looks like you already got the welder lots of good people on this site to help, also you tube video's (Gibson63) guy does incredible work and talks you through it very well

I had some rust and best way to get rid of it was... I did all the work in my 24x24 shop
