Welcome to the board from South Mississippi!
They make gears to match your speedo to your rear ratio, and I am sure someone will tell you were to get em!

Not yet but I think I will stop by today if one of the older guys is working. The newbies have problems locating the good stuff for our trucks! Thanks!

Anothe Mississippi welcome to you.
Like the others mentioned, I have always had my best luck withspeedo adjustments using the dealers to find the right gear combo.

Hey 71, I don't have a tach either but I do have an engine analyzer(tach/dwell meter).I put it on the dash and ran the cords thru the vent window and under the hood. After hooking the wires up the only thing left to do was take a ride.I now know that I have 3.07 rear gears.Took all of 15 min since I had to get gas to drive the truck.

or better yet...jack the ol truck up...mark the drive shaft with a marker....mark the tire...make one full turn of the tire and count how many times the drive shaft turns....not exact...but it will give ya a general idea.....3 turns...3.08 or 3.07,.....31\2 turns....3.55...and so on

She spins a nice low RPM on the open road, but I would rather have a few more revs in all reality. This truck gets better MPG at 80-ish than it does at 55. (I've documented it many times) and plus the off the line performance pretty much sucks. I have to work it pretty hard to get the right rear to turn, even with the big ass cam in it.

On an open rear, you turn the wheel 2 turns and count the driveshaft revs. Try it if you're skeptical.

As I get older, some of my "crazy" wears off It looks like we run about the same rpms. Final ratio on the longhorn is around 3.11 (4.10 x .76) in 6th gear......it sure makes a big diff cruising down the hyway! 4.10s/ 400T/loose converter ran 4000 @ 78 mph......it didnt take too many miles to break in the last engine crazyL

LOL, I know what you're saying. I stay away from teh freeways these days so i am not tempted to do 90+ (which is the flow 1/2 the damn time). I take all the 2 lane black tops to work these days.
Man, does that mean I'm growing up? Growing old? I don't like the sounds of this...and to boot, my wife found white in my bierd and chest. |
