spare tire under bed

boy it sure was a pain to get my spare tire in the rack under the bed......... anybody else have this trouble

I did until I fitted a newer style winch into it. A lot less crawling under the bumper.

You need to make sure you get the long rod that goes down the tube with whichever winch you get. They're a matched set.

I don't know, I've never dropped it since I bought it in '01. I figure a spare is so rarely needed it's not a thing to bother with. If I get a flat I'll probably just call someone to bring a spare from home. Been there done that on other trucks I never carried a spare on. Might as well just remove it. Of the dozens of trucks I've had I may have had a half dozen flats in decades. I still think under the bed is the best place for it. If I went on a really long trip I'd toss a wheel/tire in the bed, jjust as I'd be carrying tools I normally don't

I hear people gripe about the modern winch set-ups, too. I think they are great. My '72 actually has the optional slide-out mount, but I've never cut the little padlock and checked it out

Years ago I thought about putting the spare under the bed on my '71 4x4. Guy at work who had a square body with that set up mentioned the first time I had to drop that spare in the mud because of a flat I wouldn't like that set up as much. Thought about it and decided he was most likely right. Found a in-the-bed mount bracket and put the spare up front behind the driver's side in the bed. Has worked out great for me, not so much if a truck had a camper or shell on it tho.

Spend $25 at a junkyard and get a lifting style tire carrier from a late model truck. Still under the bed and easy to get in and out. Yes, dropping in the mud a mess but better than waiting half a day for your unreliable buddy to finally get there with the spare!

My 68 has both in the bed and under the bed!
I guess the previous owner didn't like the idea of having a flat,so was prepared for the worst!
I've never had a flat yet.

Mine rides in the bed and my jack and tools in my garage. I figure AAA can just help me swap tires if there is an issue.

Went to install mine and the trailer hitch (originally installed by the original owner) is in the way! I don't know what he did with his spare tire, but it doesn't go there any more...

The under bed spare is not that bad to me. I just put mine back into operation last week as a matter of fact. I took my 16.5 steel rim to the tire shop and told the tire guy to put the smallest tire on it he had. It's just a bit of technique to get the tire leaning on the dropped hanger and then roll the tire so the rim rolls onto the flanges, then you do need to muscle the drop side up. Getting it out is easy, just unscrew and let one side of the hanger drop. Change spare and put flat in bed of truck. Put spare back in hanger when you are back home on good ground.

Yes, you have to be a bit tough to rassle spare tires.... fun! I'm an old tire rassler from way back!

Now that I have the spare in... I'm inoculated from flats... I hope!

That's a long dog truck. Are you sure you had it setup in the correct holes in the frame. I have a hitch too, my spare fits.

I have a 1972 3/4 ton But i run the Michelin Rib tires 235/85/16 that give me 200K or 5 years before the side wall gives out.But i had to put a tire under the bed so But i needed a hitch so i used a trailer rim witch is only 6 inches wide compared to the 7.5.Then i found a Goodyear 215 85 16 tire brand new for 10.00 Put it on the rim put it under the truck and i'm done..Plus it puts weight in the rear end

I pulled mine off the C20. Nice shape. I'll reinstall it when I'm bored, but no way I'm using an original under-bed carrier. I picked up an in-bed carrier in its stead. Pulled the aux. tank, then lost interest and "forgot" to install the carrier. Project C10 keeps me busy man. C20 is for fun, rusty cab and all.

Get a stepside with the spare tire cutout. Done. No rusting, no rusted cables, no filling full of dirt and gravel, easy to check tire pressure on and top off, and easy to get to.

I have needed a spare tire five times in my life although two of those times were from dry-rotted blowouts as the car those were on had sat in a junkyard for years before I towed the vehicle home. I check my spare tire pressure every 6 months, whenever I do a tire rotation. I could not imagine calling anyone over a flat tire even though I have "roadside assistance" via insurance. I have pulled over and changed tires for/helped many a motorist change their tire, even at night, at night in the rain, and once, I helped a police officer change his tire!

My truck still has the original spare tire it came with...dad having never had a flat on the truck.

I put the under-the-bed spare back on mine to add some load to the back of my truck. She is ass-happy when I hit a bump unless she has a load on her. It helped quite a bit.

I really want to add the cutout fender and the spare rack for my longstep. No room underneath because of the hitch.

If you go original fender, you'll need the one without the hole.

why didn't you just extend the hanger bolts by 1.5 inches. I,am going to make me a set of new bolts out of stainless steel this winter
