Question Brake drum removal - Dually

I am in the process of giving my 78 Chevy 1-Ton dually a rear brake job. I have it on jacks stands, the tires off and have removed the axle shafts from both sides. I think I have to remove the nut in the axle tube also, is that correct? If yes, how do I remove the "nut"? It is circular with round indentations in it - is it a sort of spanner wrench? I can also see a lock washer with a tab bent over holding it in place, that part looks easy

yeh there is a socket to remove that "spanner" nut. Your local autoparts store should have them - around $15ish

Thanks Arkracing, you were right - I found one online at O'reillys, part number 2770, by KD.

I thought that the rear ends used the 6 pin socket. If your spanner nut only has 4 slots then that should work. If it has 6 then it wont work

I think mine has six slots/holes. I just noticed that the pic of their advertisement I posted is goofed up. The text in the advertisement says 6 lug, but the pic is of a 4 lug.

I just ordered KD Tools - Spindle Socket #2770 from my local O'reillys - will have it by lunch time and I can test it tonight.

The following isn't the "best" way but it works in a pinch...
a punch or a screwdriver and tap w/ a hammer.

The socket is handy to have.

I ordered and received the spindle socket from our local O'reillys. The one I got did fit correctly and I was able to remove both the nuts and then the rear drum. Of course that means more questions, but I will save them for another thread.

The socket was made by KD Tools, part number 2770. It fits the spindle nut on a 78 Chevy, 1 ton, 4x4, dually. Oh yeah, it has 6 lugs/pins.

There are two spanners nuts you take off and the drum comes off. I just learned last week when i did my rear brakes. I didn't use a special socket. Just tapped it with a punch. There also might be a retainer ring and a key mine didnt but thats what the repair manuel said. Ou should replace the seals while you have the drums off. If you have any ?s hit me up
