Question Engine trouble....

Just askin' for other Ideas as to what may be causing a few problems with my engine...

it is real hard to set a good idle... 850 out of gear turns into a rough 500 as soon as it goes into gear

recently it's started surging while idling....

any thoughts on this would be helpful.... Thanks

as far as the engine goes.....

283 V8, Edelbrock performer manifold, 1406 carb, original points dist. and a powerglide tranny, that as far as I know has never been opened up...

engine was rebuilt around 6000 miles ago... and carb and intake have only been on for last 600-700 miles..... any suggestions as to what to look for would help.... thanks

First off how is your timing? Did you set the dwell? Did you set the timing with the vacuum advance plugged?

timing should be OK..... was set right but haven't checked it for a bit.....vaccuum was plugged at the time.... don't know about the dwell though..... haven't checked points lately..... if it's the points I'll probably just throw an HEI in it

If you've checked obvious things (points, timing, vacuum leaks, etc.), I'd do a compression check just to make sure you're starting with good internals.... then you can dig deeper into fuel and ignition... good luck.
