Valve cover clearance
Put my 283 back in my '66 over the weekend and I have about a 1/4 inch of clearance between the valve covers and the firewall. I have tall covers and was wondering about moving the motor mount towers forward about an inch. I want to keep the tall valve covers. The trans xmember won't be an issue because I am switching to TH350.

Shouldn't be- I am running the original two piece with carrier bearing. The distance from carrier to rearend will not change and since I am switching to auto trans- I was already going to have to adjust the shaft length from carrier to trans.

Sounds like it shouldn't be a big issue to move it all at this point in your build. Just have to drill some new holes......

I am running a bbc in my 66 with tall valve covers no clearanc problems you should have no problem.also you want the engine as far back as it will go to give a better weight distribution.if you move the engine to far foward it will handle like a dog also if you move the engine foward a simple cam change will turn into a engine pull. Now i will tell you clearance is a lil tight by the power brake booster and fan box but unless you are running a solid cam this should be no problem

Which motor mount brackets did you use? On my Suburban I made my own so I could move the engine forward a couple of inches for enough firewall clearance. I'm running the M/T covers as well.

As others have said you should not have an issue. You may want to use the later 73 up perches. I think they may give you a little better clearance but not sure.
