Looking at a 67, need help

I love the 67-72 trucks but don't know a whole lot about them. I found one to check out and wanted to see what the "experts" thought. This is what I was told over the phone: 67 1/2 ton, 4 spd, 4x4, has a 292 "overhauled" 30k ago and then pulled out for a V8 swap which never happened, typical rust (cab corners was mentioned specifically), repainted long time ago before current owner, rear brakes need work, says it is complete and truck was running fine before pulling the motor a few years back and motor has been kept inside. So, according to the conversation, I should be able to hook the motor back up, fix brakes, and have a running truck again. Owner is asking $1200.

I know it is hard to tell without actually seeing it, but I'm interested to hear what thoughts are concerning the condition, price, etc. In my limited searches it has been hard to find a 67 4x4, are they really hard to find or have I been missing them? I hope to go see it within the next couple days, so let me know what you think.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Looking at a 67, need help

'67 4X4's are few and far between, and usually pretty beat when you see them. If it were me, I would take a drive and look at it, then post pictures of the truck. If everything checks out, I would say that $1200 is a very fair price.

Living in Utopia, and going by the conversation and what you have posted, yes, it would be a good deal. You definitely need to look at it first. Take some pics. If the cab corners are gone, expect the rockers and door bottoms to be gone as well. I'd love to see it though.

Re: Looking at a 67, need help

67 4x4's are very rare, and sometimes not worth bothering with.. but I have a 68 and have enjoyed replacing parts so far...

My questions would be

1. What are you going to use it for? daily driver, show truck, fun beater???

2. How much do you want to spend and how nice do you want it?

3. How long do you want it off the road to work on it?

292's are nice engines and $1200 isn't bad. Is it a long or short bed? stepside or fleetside? options or no options? Look for tow hooks on the front, rotted floors/frame, warped/rotted tailgate etc...

Some bad things on a 67:
1. four wheel drum manual brakes
2. closed knuckle front axle
3. rockwell T-221 transfer case
4. no power steering
5. no A/C

These aren't show stoppers but things that you avoid by buying a 71/72 usually. I have overcome all but #3 &#5..

take tons of pics and post them for us!!

Re: Looking at a 67, need help

Thanks for the info guys. Found out it is a fleetside long bed. I am going to look at it tomorrow evening and will do my best to post pics.

msgross, I plan to use it as a 2nd vehicle for around the town, I'm only 3 blocks from work, maybe a 30 to 60 min drive one way now and then to haul the dirt bikes to go riding with my boys, overall a fun beater. Right now I don't want to put a lot of money in it, looking for something I can have running for minimal money at this time. Plan to do more with it down the road, after my first project has sucked all the money out of me that it can. On your list #1, 4, & 5 do not bother me and I can deal with them and/or improve them with time. However, #2 & 3 I am not as familar with.

Re: Looking at a 67, need help - HAVE PICS!!!

Went to look at the truck and it was not as good as the description given (not a shock there). It has sat since 1992. Anyway, here is a link to some pics. Tell me what you think.

http://s556.photobucket.com/albums/s...dd/67%20truck/

He also has a 72 3/4 ton for sale and says he has the fenders, hood, and grille for it. I'm not interested in the 72 but thought someone here might be, so take a look if you want.

Actually, for Iowa it doesn't look too bad - if someone was looking for a rare truck, that would be a nice one to go through. I'm just glad I'm not closer - I'd have to look hard at it!

Re: Looking at a 67, need help

'67's CAN be rare. They made almost 100K of them, in different configurations and styles. (Someone chime in if I am wrong about production #'s).

What I have learned about owning a '67 stepper is this.

1) The small rear window (as cool as it is), sucks for real world driving. It creates a major blind spot.

2) There are a few things that are one year only, if you are considering restoring your truck.

The fact that my stepper was a one year only (and the first year of this body style) was my drive for restoring my truck. I suppose if the fact that you have a one year only truck is a bonus, then go for it. Twelve hundred bucks seems reasonable for a 4X4 of this year. Let us know what you decide. My stepper was in pretty beat condition and it cost me about 2500 bucks to get it!

Re: Looking at a 67, need help

It's not horrible for $1,200 but I would not pay more than $1,000 with that rust. It will need everything and will take lots of time to get up and runnig having sat since 1992. I would recommend finding something running and be willing to pay more than $1,200.

If only I had the room! I'm pushing the limit of my small confines with the thought of only 1 truck as it is.

I am giving it serious consideration since I've found it hard to find a 67 4x4. Also, I'm partial to the 67's because I've always thought it would be fun to have a 67 truck to go with the 67 chevelle (the other project). Maybe a stupid reason, but it's a reason.

I understand. If I had the room, I'd have several trucks. A matching set of 67's is certainly a good enough reason to want one. Good Luck with your decision.

jjsledd, you'll regret it!! They are rare. Didn't I read somewhere there were only 1221 '67 SWB K10's? Don't know about LWB...I'll have to find the link to the production #'s.

We started with a FREE '67 K10 swb stepper and now we have a free '70 K20 LWB fleet, a ($300) '67 C10 LWB fleet, a ($700) '71 C10 GMC LWB fleet, and another ($400) mystery truck thrown in for good measure. These are supposed to be "parts trucks", but all ran on their own power except one. The '67 is going back stock and we've had luck so far in that all parts we've needed have been replaceable (cab corners, rockers, basic body stuff). And it looked lots worse than the one you have pictured. He's about to break down the 292 and tear into the hubs. That'll be the real test. Once he's done with it, we'll have a '67 Chevy to haul a '67 Boston Whaler that will be driven by a '67 girl!! So I know what you mean....it's not a stupid reason.

Then the '70 K20 will be a daily driver once the parts from the other trucks are moved to it. She'll make a nice beater!!

Re: Looking at a 67, need help

offer $900 and settle for 1K and get that baby back on the road...

67/68 4x4's are rare and you are correct that they only made a few thousand of each type. I have the numbers somewhere as well...

I would clean up the drum brakes and get the engine running... throw a sheet of plywood in the bed and some new rubber and have fun with it...

You just summed up the game plan I've been working on. I'd be interested in seeing the production #'s if someone has them, makes me curious.

Well, I talked to a buddy tonight who said he could haul it home for me, so I hope to go back tomorrow evening and make an offer. That is if he hasn't sold it since Tuesday night (please no)!

Thanks guys for all the info, this is a great site. I'll keep you posted!

Looks a heck of a lot better than what I was expecting.

You need to get underneath it, and check out the frame and cab. Sitting out in the weather above dirt can be very bad.

Here's the link for production #'s. Looks like yours is on of 2715. Like we said....rare.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=104816

And msgross is an authority on 67/68 4x4's, if you ask me. My husband and I will argue about something with the truck, and I'll usually win by saying "Big Mike" says it's so. LOL!! I've got his build thread saved and we'll go look at it often. Just hope ours turns out half as good. The ONLY reason I'm relenting and letting hubby have his way about original color is because of Mike's truck.

Here's a pic of what we started with...

(Trust me...the picture makes the truck look GREAT!!!) Corners were gone, rockers nothing but rot, floors had rot, frame was damaged and shoddily repaired. It was a sad state. But she's on the rotisserie now and has been put back to some sort of normalcy. It is a labor of love, though.

Re: Looking at a 67, need help

So I went to look at it for a second time tonight. This time I tried to use more objective eyes and be more thorough. As previously stated, pictures often make things look better, which is true in this case. Found a lot more bondo this time at the cab corners, bed sides, and some rust in the cab floor. However, that can all be fixed, the frame looks very good, and the engine turned over easily with a cheater bar. Seller is a very nice guy that is needing to feed his tractor habit but has an obvious emotional tie to this truck. So his asking price of $1200 was very firm. I offered $900, he instantly said "no". After a pause, I reply "well, I have $1000 in cash with me and that's it". I go on to describe how I plan to get it running and back on the road first so I can just use it, and then over time restore it as I'm able. I add that I have 3 boys (11, 8, and 7) that I plan to have help me where they can and learn (I'll learn a lot too!), then they will learn how to drive a stick shift in this truck (all true by the way, not just to get a better deal). He says I'll take $1100 and nothing less.

So, despite all of the body issues, I'm still thinking when will I find another 67 4x4 I can afford, so I said "DEAL," and shook his hand. I have finally joined the ranks of 67-72 owners, I've waited a long time!!!

I hope to bring it home this Sunday. I also hope buyers remorse doesn't set in. My wife and dad are both excited about it, as well as myself obviously. Let the fun begin. Now I need to go to bed, but I have a feeling the "high" is not going to make it easy.

It'll be OK -- remorse doesn't come into play until after your 2nd or 3rd truck purchase.
