Ok, so this is how I found my new project. Out in the country, deep in the woods, covered in leaves, home of several rats, and up to the lower control arms in mud.
I couldn't have gotten a sweeter deal as I ended up with a 69 short step as well.

No engine,or trans in either truck but I've got a setup for it.
I've been workin on so many vehicles over the years that I ended up with a pile of leftovers that I could use to build one good truck. I'm planing on doin this one for a hot rod truck will be strong, sound good and have some nuts when I need to pull somethin.
Im hopin to have this done by spring, and boy have I got a lot of work to do.
Ill post more progress pics as I can, fingers are freezing cause its 25 deg today...

Started the teardown, cab needs some work, fenders are ok, bed is decent. Frame is in pretty good shape considering it was buried for the past five years or so...

Ok, so this is the part of the thread where im gonna make some of the purists mad, get a bunch of "why this and why that."
Im building this truck my way cause its what I have to work with. I dont have any money to just throw at this truck to build it back to show quality. That's not what I want anyway. Matter of fact, the only parts im needing is the rear lowering springs. Getting the setup from Early Classic, when I can save some money. Have plenty to do while im savin.

I subscribed. I'm all about using what you have to make something cool instead of shelling out cash to everybody that manufactures an aftermarket part. Pretty cool splice.

I will be following along with your build too. I am also not afraid of a little slice and dice here and there. I put that same clip under a 41 Chevy coupe years ago and she handled great.
This approach was common years ago before Alston, Porterbuilt, etc. started manufacturing such great products. You used what was available to make what you had better.
I adhere to the policy of "your truck, do what you want".
I'm right dead in the middle of building a 1 ton, dually, short, stepside. So yeah, I get it. Took 60" of length out of my frame.
Keep up the good work. I love to see progress.

Trucks are so much cooler, but you cant argue with the Z28 package. Just plice em together, fill in the gaps, make it strong, make it look cool.
Im fitting in some 1"x1" angle in the door threshold. Im really just "quick", fixin it so I can get it done. Rust aint to bad, so im patchin.
I want this one outta here so I can bring in the 69, its smaller so ill have more room to work. I had to take the bumper off the rear to get the whole frame in the garage.

Yup, im slpicin it into a 1980 Z28 front clip. To many positives for me NOT to do this. I also have the rear sway bar from the same car, thats goin on a 9" that I have a built third member and built brakes already.
The 454 is stock out of a 86 Pace Arrow motorhome with an airgap intake, full MSD ignition system, and a 3310 Holley on top. Trans is a built Hughes performance 350 with a 2500 street master stall.
Like I said, I've got everything else but the rear springs, and the saddles for the trailing arms.

Boy, that was more work than I planed. Cut these panels the exact same way,size,and shape. The drivers side didnt fit worth a crap. Frame was crushed in a little bit, spent a lot of time straighting and reforming the channel to get the panels in.
Also, I noticed some of these guys boxin their frames arent painting the insides before they install the plates. Am I the only one that thinks this should be done?
I know SOME of it will burn off when its welded, but at least I know there's something in there.
Now im off to dig my square tubing out and lay out an x brace or two.

I do a little everyday, more thinkin than doin really.
Work gets all in my way. I tried makin a livin doin this but around here, folks really dont have the money. I've been burned on a few jobs I did so I figured it was not meant to be.

I hear ya on stuff getting in the way. Right now I am working up the effort to go and warm up the shop to work on my 64.

Eh, its not as bad as it was last night. Didnt know it was that cold until I stopped workin around 11:30 or so. I hope weldin that frame in the cold didnt make for weak welds. Didnt think about that.
Its all 10 ga metal so penetration should be good, but it cooling down to fast may make it brittle... any thoughts?
