What internally turns off the hazard switch?
I just replaced my turn signal switch and everything works perfectly. But when I function my hazard knob and turn the flashers on, I am not able to turn them off by just pulling the switch back out. I took the steering wheel back off and see there is a little tab inside the switch that must be pushed towards the out side of the column to turn the switch back off. My question is once I put the wheel back on, how is this tab supposed to be functioned to be turned back off?
Here is a picture of the said tab (flat, black tab on the bottom) that has to be pressed to turn the flashers back off. |

Re: What internally turns off the hazard switch?
1. Did you buy a brand new switch?
2. Is this a picture of the old switch that you took apart? I have to figure what is going on here so I can understand your question. It is a pain to put these back together so hopefully you are just showing the old switch as an example?

Re: What internally turns off the hazard switch?
The hazard sw works by pushing in the center button to engage the switch (ON) and the outer collar is used to disengage the switch (OFF) correct?
Does your steering wheel have to be in a certain position to allow that? It looks like there is a flat portion there that only allows it to engage at one point.

Re: What internally turns off the hazard switch?
if your truck is a 1967 year model the hazard switch is turned off by activating your blinker ,this is a 1 year feature only that GM changed in 1968

Re: What internally turns off the hazard switch?
I was thinking that was one piece, if you assume for a minute that your new piece is not broken then it sounds like you have something that fell behind it while you where tightening it down and it is in a bind.
Can you unscrew the 3 screws holding it and let it loose and then see if it will allow you to pull it back out the way you normally would?

Re: What internally turns off the hazard switch?
Here is a short video of what I'm describing. This is from a totally separate column but the same part, so I don't think i installed it incorrectly.

Re: What internally turns off the hazard switch?
Did you try the turn signal to turn it off like Jrainman suggested? Your hazard switch does not look like the standard replacement type switch that I got so maybe you do have the 67 only switch?
AC Delco replacement that is supposed to fit 67-72 (this is what I have and looks a little different than yours)

Re: What internally turns off the hazard switch?
I'm pretty sure it's the correct part. I crossed referenced the a/c delco switch with the Borg Warner part and had Orielly's Auto check to make sure it was correct as well. Turn signals do nothing to cancel the hazards as well as turning the steering wheel and pushing pressing pulling on the hazard knob. I figured the cam inside the column that also cancels the turn signals would do the same for the hazards but it doesn't. I've played with the new switch and the old and they both operate the same way.
Anothe clip of the switch installed. https://vid.me/LYfR |

Re: What internally turns off the hazard switch?
I had that exact same issue when I replaced the turn signal switch in my 69 C20. All I did was install it and put a little force by pulling it out to turn it off. Now I can turn them off like normally.

Re: What internally turns off the hazard switch?
Nope, I just put it all together and then after turning the flashers on I tried pulling the knob back out and after pulling with enough force it finally gave in. I'm pretty sure the part of the clip that locks it in is just a little too high because I got the same replacement switch so it just takes some force on the first unlock to make it able to be turned on and off with ease.

Re: What internally turns off the hazard switch?
Right, the replacement is the '73-up part. The only difference is the knob design. The red nob didn't normally break, the signal cam would break and the knob is part of that unit. In '73 the harness connection changed also, and that is why you need the straight to horse shoe adapter.
