I don't have a sandblast cabinet (yet) but I plan to keep a set for myself with the intent to blast them and paint them. I think they would clean up very nicely.

Yes, that or krud kutter. Both products look pretty good on YouTube. Probably a better option than sandblasting.

Thanks

Re: NOS Upper Door Hinge Assemblies

I have a question that perhaps you can "sell" me on these. While I like to go NOS whenever I can, is there any difference between these and the reproduction hinges? In other words, are the repops complete crap and are going to be a problem? If so I will probably take a set. Thanks.

I don't have any experience with the reproduction hinges, so I really can't say much.

Based on some of the pictures I am finding online though, it appears that reproduction hinges' wear material (friction pad) is made of a plastic material. The originals are made of material similar to brake pads, at least in appearance.

And to bring out my inner salesman qualities, I will try to sell the idea (total guess ) that the NOS hinge's alloys are stronger/better so you will get less flex....total guess though.

Haha. Not bad. Let me give it some thought and I will definitely get back in touch. Thanks!

While I did not purchase one of 402Bowtie's sets, I can add testimonial for NOS. I had a set of aftermarket door hinges a while back. I put them on, and swapped them back with the originals. At the time, all I knew is that they didn't feel right. While they were tighter than the originals, they seemed not to line up like the originals. I couldn't tell if it was because the aftermarket were just new and not broken in like the originals.

Later, I purchased a set (upper and lower hinges with same surface rust, which is typical for almost all hinge sets I've seen. It wasn't until I mocked my NOS set up that I found that either I got really good at installing doors (not likely), or the OEM part just simply fit better. I think it's the latter.

To treat the surface rust, I just used a chemical agent to remove the rust, and another to convert any remaining rust to an inert compound (that's the black tint). After that, I used a metal etch, and primed, leaving the original factory texture on the metal for the hinge arm and pad in the upper hinge.

The other aspect that I like about the NOS set is that they are not super-shiny like the aftermarket ones. The upper hinge arm and pads are recognizably different in texture and color when compared to the originals. So if you're trying to do a stock restoration, that detail might be important to you.

Anyway, I'm all for the OEM on the door hinges. But of course, it's all about preference.

Thanks for that insight Richard. Good tips too! I think your rust treatment is the way to go.
